I was just wondering why we are restricted to 32kb (at 100x100 I dont think we can make an avatar all that big)

Whilst making my new avatar (thanks for the suggestion) I ran into a few size restrictions!

It's all to try to keep the load size down. That's why I also don't permit externally referenced avatars to be used.

Add a few avatars - up to 50 per page - to some image files, and you start to get into page load issues. Especially relevant for those who are not on broadband.

It's like signatures, btw: we actually killed graphics in sigs quite some time ago because of what people wanted to do.

It only becomes an issue when people use animation in the avatar. I have no bias against animated avatars - some are quite amusing - but my preference is that we try to keep the forums focus on content, rather than fluff.

Point taken, I have been spoilt by broadband internet. It does add up quickly if you think about it.

one of the reasons why I originally signed up!

I have a real dislike for forums where 99% of the thread, both size and content is dominated by avatars, gear listing, signature, quotes, the kitchen sink, last nights dinner...etc

I really also like the lack of ads :D

This site even works quite nicely in lynx, (except for the images of course :D) and thats usually a good sign of a clean compliant site.

Cameron, I like your new avatar, nice concept :D

Thanks, I think it was Gary, Matt K or Greg who gave me the idea at the christmas meet. I got carried away and did a bigger one. Check http://www.scout-images.com/?p=341 for the bigger one (3.5mb approx)
