I was browsing the Photomatix site after looking at Kane's great HDR images and stumbled upon what must be one of the most creative uses of HDR I've ever seen. The images by photographer/artist Luke Kaven are just amazing. Go check them out by clicking HERE.

Nice find Peter, usually I shy away from the overdone HDR look, but in this case the series creates a surreal almost storybook feel to the shots, and it really suits the subjects, I also like his use of WA lenses and distortion to further push the surrealism.

I'm fascinated by these images; they remind me of images that I have seen in galleries in New Orleans, with the bright, saturated colours and subject matter.

But I'm left wondering and pondering how he did these. With some of them, there is obvious subject movement, but with others, there is none. And with some images containing multiple people, that is difficult to comprehend. I would love to understand more of the specifics of his technique, as well as the exposure parameters of the baseline images.

Some brilliant examples of work. Awe inspiring stuff. I cant seem to get colours to pop like that with my HDR efforts but examples like these encourage me to keep at it.

Hey, it's summer in here.

I think working in very low light makes for some unusual effects with HDR. The process will pick up some shades and gradations from very dim light sources that the naked eye does not readily see. In all the images you see, all colors are actually in the scene. Sometimes it takes a while to find a setting that is right for a given subject. I bracket by +-2EV steps, capture with no curves or adjustments to 16 bit TIFs, and go straight to HDR in Photomatix. If you work in very low light, I'd suggest not doing white balance until after tonemapping.

Great photos and the HDR treatment really give them that bit of extra. You start with a very good composition and your treatment certainly then enhances theses images.

Hi Luke, thanks for taking the time to come on here and provide some more details. I have only tried NEFs with photomatix but you've inspired me to try shooting TIF and see if I can push my results a little further As I said said in the email, I really dig the affect you've achieved in this set.
