What cameras have you owned?

Postby gstark on Fri Jan 02, 2009 9:23 am

In this thread, Mick (ljxphotography) makes mention of the fact that, over an extended period of time, he has owned more than just a couple of cameras.

I think it would be a good idea for us each to try to remember and list the various cameras that we've owned over time, perhaps with some brief observations about some of them. Please, this is not meant to be a pissing contest, but more of a general interest type of thing.

I think we should probably avoid the very simple phds of yesteryear - the 127s, the instamatics, and the like. Most Polaroids and Kojaks also would probably be best avoided; likewise disposables.

Here's my (incomplete) list.

Voigtlander rangefinder (model unknown)
Practica LTL
Zenith (Model unknown)
Nikkormat FTn - with 55mm Micro lens. Still have this; solid as a brick.
Nikon FM
Nikon FE
Nikon FE2 - still have this.
Nikon FA
Nikon F801 - still have this
Mamiya C330
Mamiya 645 - camera returned due to being faulty and repairs were ineffective.
Bronica ETRs (x 2) - still have one. A great camera.
Kodak DC20 - my first digital; still have it.
Nikon Coolpix 950 - still have this
Nikon Coolpix 5700 - still have this. This camera has superb glass.
Nikon D70 - still have this
Nikon D200 - still have this
Nikon D300 - still have this
Canon A1 (x2) - one of the best 35mm bodies ever made.
Canon 30D - still have this
Nagaoka Cherrywood 4x5 view camera. Like my double bass, beautiful to look at as well as to use.
Speedgraphic 4x5. Remember the type of camera Jimmy Olsen used in the old Superman tv series? :)

I mentioned that the Nikkormat was as solid as a brick. This is true for each of the Nikon Fx bodies mentioned above. They were all of metal construction, handsome to look at, and all were able to be used even without a battery. Today's cameras, without a battery, are just paperweights.

I've not included cameras that others have given to me as "collectibles".

The two cameras from this list that I wish I still had an example of would be the Nagaoka, and the A1.

Great idea, Gary.

Excluding the box brownie and Kodak Instamatic, here's my list.

Nikonos III - Still have this
Ricoh KR10
Pentax LX
Nikon FE2 - Still have this - a fantastic camera and probably one of my favourites
Nikon F801s - Still have this - my first introduction to AF although the kit lens was the only AF lens I had until I got the 60mm f/2.8D
Coolpix 950 - Still have this
Coolpix 4500 - Still have this - this was an excellent replacement to my Nikonos III for underwater use.
Nikon D70 - Still have this - My first dSLR. I loved this camera, until I got the D300
Nikon D300 - Still have this (of course) - A simply wonderful camera

Adding them now.

You moved from K mount to F mount.

I moved from screw mount to F mount, because I was starting to do some wedding photography, and I could see that what I had was simply not going to be up to the task.

What prompted your move?

Flash sync. The Pentax LX, which was a great camera by the way, only had a 1/60s flash sync. The FE2 has 1/250s.

I had poured over the specs of the LX for months before I bought it but somehow I missed that little detail. Within hours of getting the camera in my hands I had major buyer's remorse and bought the FE2 shortly after.

At the time I had mostly Tamron SP lenses with Adaptall-2 mounts so switching was not a huge problem.

My first SLR was a Zennit TTL around 1980,
traded it in a few weeks later for a Pentax ME Super which got damaged in a flood in around 2002 and i have since smashed open to have a look inside
bought a SH ME Super in 2002.
these were only ever used for happy snaps.

bought my first DSLR on new years eve 2004 to try and capture the new years eve fireworks ... the Pentax *istDs worked well but looking at the fireworks at surfers from the top of a mountain just didn't work although it rekindled a big interest in Photography which had remained dormant and i took 25,000 pics in 2 years with it. i still have it!

bought a Pentax K100D in Aug 2006 , great camera with shake reduction, i still have it.

bought the Pentax K10D in december 2006, 10Mp shake reduction and weather sealing was good but i preferred the IQ of the 6Mp K100D still have it as my main backup camera

bought the Pentax K20D in feb 2008 and IQ is as good as the K100D but with 14.6Mp its cropability is fantastic .. just simply love this camera 8)

since 2004 when i bought that DSLR i have also collected quite a few lenses due to my Sony case of LBA

Here's my (incomplete) list.
:chook:

well I had better put in my super long extensive list of all the cameras...

Sony DSC-V1 - Stolen, awesome camera, compact and took great pictures, excellent for a newbie..
Sony DSC-V3 - actually preferred the V1 but this also took many a fine pictures for me - still own it.
Nikon D80 - awesome camera perfect upgrade from a P&S.
gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.

In the digital SLR era (I did in the olden days have a Pentax P30)

D40 - sold
D2H - sold
D300 - still have
D2HS - sold
D3 - still have

Can't see me getting another for awhile

Maybe a D400 in DX if it has noise capabilities of the D700/D3

Here are mine best as I can remember in rough order:

Agfa Isolette (folding 120 camera from 1960)
Pentax SV (separate meter mounted on top)
Praktika SLR (screw mount)
Cosina SLR (screw mount)
Nikkormat *
Nikomat (That's what it says) *
Nikkorex *
Nikon FE *
Nikon FE * (Used five Nikon bodies for different speed of film and infrared)
Widelux F7 35mm panorama camera *
Ensign 6x9 old folding camera * (I think I still have it - I thought the format would give good quality but I didn't anticipate the lens)
Arca Swiss 5x4 monorail *
Nagaoka 5x4 field camera * (probably just like Gary's)
Rollieflex TLR * (from 1937 but still very sharp - much better I discovered in 1987 than a Mamiya 645)
Panasonic FZ20 * (well, my partner has that now)
Panasonic FZ50 *
Gaoersi 6x17 panorama camera *
Nikon D3 *

(* Still have these)

Hey Gary, just to clarify, do you mean cameras that you have owned and used or just owned?
If it's owned and used, my list would probably reduce by about 50.

Ok, I'll limit it to what I actually used extensively.

Mamiya ZE-X -The camera that got me hooked into photography.
Nikon FM2
Bronica etrs x2
Yashicamat twin lens
Hasselblab ELM
Minolta 7xi
Minolta 600si Classic
Casio Z3
Nikon D70

I enjoy collecting cameras, I currently have about 35 of them, at one stage I had aound 60 but the display cabinet was too cramped so I scaled down.

Had a few but

Ricoh something?-First SLR
EOS 500- first AF SLR
EOS 5- my most used SLR
EOS 3 - good but was losing interest by this time

Also a great Olympus OM2SP and a few Canonet rangefinder's

Concurrently I wandered into medium and large format.
Yashica TLR- first time composing on ground glass. What a revelation!
Bronica ETR 6x4.5
***Agfa Isolette III* 6x6 with solinar (Folding rangefinder)
*Agfa Record 6x9 with Solinar- awesome. probably still my best quality vs ease of use.(folding rangefinder)
**Speed graphic 4x5, still got two but never really made the most of it
*Calumet C1 8x10 (and 4x5 back) Green monster and like looking at a TV screen. Made some cool paper negatives but film was too expensive to use it as much as i want. (and also only had a 4x5 enlarger)

Heaps of other old folders that never saw much use.

Digital
*Canon s80
Canon 400D
*Canon 350D Infrared modded
*Canon 50D love the AF micro adjust and live view magnify focus

Favourite format- 6x9
Best quality- 8x10 inch. The negative is as big as a standard print!! Tone in contact prints is something else.
Easiest to use- EOS

* still own
Bold fav of that format

I gained my interest in photography in my teens and aside from getting a job as a camera technician trainee straight out of school I was also spent a lot of time tyre kicking every new camera on the market in the early eighties. The one thing I discovered very early on was that of all the serious cameras at the time, the Nikons were the most intuitive to use. When I could afford it I bought my first Nikon, the FE2 and after that I was hooked.
I do get to use Canon cameras on an occasional basis (I was regularly reviewing them for magazines up until Canon got shirty with me over my review of the Canon 5D) and I still stand by my opinion that Nikons are more intuitive to use.

Each of these cameras share the same basic body/mechanics. I think it is quite astounding that, for many of us, many other bodies have come, and gone, through our possession, yet these ones remain, and do so with great respect for the capabilities of the camera.

These are from the posts where I can discern that the camera remains within the realm of the poster: there may be others, but the post may not have made clear the disposition of the camera.

Yes, that's interesting Gary.
One of my biggest regrets is having sold the FM2 (and the Blad) not so with the F80, that camera never did much for me, although I got it just as digital was getting started so that may have had some influence.
