Best is to buy the Op-Tech pro-loop camera strap.

By default it comes with a quick release that can let you hook it up as a wrist strap. The neck strap park can hook back to your belt or your bag.

It only cost not much more than a DIY solution to a quick release and it is 10 times more comfortable than the original strap.

After checking their website (hadn't heard of them prior), they are unsuitable.
There are relatively long side straps that connect to the camera eyelets, and fall away to the sides, when the shoulder strap itself is not connected.

I can only afford to have 1" max dangling on the sides, so I might pursue the original idea of a small keyring looped through the D300 eye, and then those QR car key chain thingos that attaches to the standard strap.

The other setup I have is the lowepro neoprene strap with key ring. The lowepro strap comes with those snap on key ring style hooks. You can choose to have the extension strap on the camera or not.
If you don't have the extension strap on, it might be too short if you plan to swing the camera across your shoulder.

I have been using the R-strap for some time and highly recommend the system.

Actually, they don't have to dangle, you clip them to each other which makes for a very short strap or you can mix and match the connector, the pro loop that Yip refers to is just one of many, have a look here:
