There are relatively long side straps that connect to the camera eyelets, and fall away to the sides, when the shoulder strap itself is not connected.
I can only afford to have 1" max dangling on the sides, so I might pursue the original idea of a small keyring looped through the D300 eye, and then those QR car key chain thingos that attaches to the standard strap.
