Pocket wizard question

I want to use my 430EX off camera. I can trigger it with my friend's 580EX, or I can buy the Canon doohicky, or the older pocketwizards. However, a PW product is on the market called the Mini TT1.

http://www.pocketwizard.com/products/transmitter_receiver/minitt1%20canon/

Does anyone have experience with this, and will it trigger a remote 430EX flash?

Thanks in advance.

Ozi

ozi, initial feedback from the new PW mini's has been negative. (inconsistent firing epecially), i would personally stay away until they sort them out.

Roozy, just been doing some browsing on the product and it seems you're dead right. Why can't Canon make a "Nikon" wireless system which works flawlessly? It would then be a Nikon and not a Canon! :)

Why then don't I switch back to Nikon? Because of those beautiful white lens!!!

Ozi you can't have everything. Could you paint a black lens white?

I use the first generation ebay wireless triggers with my 430EX. there were some teething problems but it works 95% of the time on a certain channel (out of 8 ). I think the second generation triggers are better. I got these for around $40 from ebay. The range varies but ok indoors (within 5 meters). If the batteries are down they misfire.

Poon's triggers also work quite well.

Do you really want the 1600m range and reliability that the traditional PW's offer? BTW for the price of PWs you can get the 580EXII. For the price of the new PW you might be able to get 580EXII + canon trigger?

interesting you say that cos for most strobist guys the complete opposite is true. ie: why buy a 580ex when you can get 3 sb24's for the same money and when used in manual mode, emit the same sort of lighting only with vastly more flexibility. its not the range only that makes PW's awesome, its the flawless reliability in any and all conditions

ie: if off-cam lighting is your thing then the rule of thumb is get the best triggers first and whatever flashguns you can afford with the money left over.

I assumed that Ozimax wanted to preserve ETTL as he was wondering about the new pocket wizards TT1?

In this situation though, Ozi already has locked on to Canon and has a canon flash gun so I think the choices are slightly skewed.

I take your point though although it is always tempting to try and preserve TTL in your setups as it is so useful in fluid situations.

yeah, you;re right surenj...my Sony.
just as a side note, sb600's and sb800's are going for more now on the used market than what i bought em for brand new. the strobist phenomenon eh ? lol

Looks like everyone is trying to preserve TTL atm, first it was the radio poppers not pocket wizards as well!

Why then don't I switch back to Nikon? Because of those beautiful white lens!!!

The Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8VR and the NIkkor 300mm f/4 come in grey....lets not mention the availability of the 70-300mm, 18-55mm, 55-200mm being available in grey-silver...

Now, if some smart person could invent a way to attach Canon lens to Nikon bodies, then all the world would be right!

Seriously, thanks for the input one and all. I'm not sure which way to go at the moment. I have access to (and infrequently borrow) a friend's studio lighting kit, but it's bulky and unwieldy. A wireless off camera lighting setup for portraits would be great. All in good time.
