it has been a long time since something in photography smacked me between the chops.

i was enlightened to James' work recently and it is something i'd like to share with you all, some of you may already know his body of work and know of him. for those that do, this is a stark reminder of his brilliance. for those that don't, welcome to a profound moment....

take some time to view, have a cup of coffee, immerse yourself in the beauty and the horror of James' world, our world.

this fathers day I got a fabulous surprise from my gorgeous wife. I got 4 stunning photography books. bresson, maier, adams and the one that took my breath away is a book titled "Inferno" which is a collection of nachtweys work. it is a GINORMOUS book. and I mean GIIIIINNNNNOOOORRRRRMOOOOUUSSSS !!! photos are either full page or across a double page. it is impeccably presented and the photography is quite simply epic. I believe the size of it is around 50cmx25cm and its around 3inches thick or something lol if you love photography and are not faint of heart you must own this masterpiece. highly recommended.

bresson's book is also full of superb work which makes you smile or gasp at every turn. I've also been a long time fan of Vivian maier and the book titled street photography is stunning. im not a huge ansel adams fan cos i'm not much into landscapes but its also very nice if you like that sort of thing.

I went to a presentation by Nachtwey a few weeks ago here in Sydney and I believe he also ran a workshop at the 10 x 8 gallery. I used to show the film, 'War Photographer' to my photography students on the last day of the their course. It changed the way they thought about their newly acquired photography skills. If you are impressed by his work then you MUST see this award winning film. I have watched it over 20 times. It is, simply, brilliant. PS Your wife spoils you.

FYI.....I believe Tim Page will be opening an exhibition at the 10 x 8 gallery this month. For those who are interested....contact the gallery and get yourself onto their mailing list. Be sure to take along your personal copy of 'REQUIEM' for him to sign. (You do have a copy, don't you?)
