I noticed while browsing another forum, the newcomer for Canon's midrange lineup is currently under alot of bad press, in relation to lock ups, odd/random flash memory incompatibility and behaviour, and the usual complaints of features lacking in a new/improved model, high noise and lack of detail issues, etc.

Reminded me of when the D70 first came out - all the negative publicity surrounding it, the majority of which were to do with focusing issues blown well out of proportion... while a number of opponents claimed the D70's competitor are faultfree.

I think I have a psychological disorder - I'm revelling in the fact that the supporters on the other side now have a taste of their own medicine. Thoughts?

Well I don't think you have a psychological disorder, but if you do, then we both have it It's a pity there isn't a "deranged" emoticon.

I like seeing anything which reinforces the decision I made to buy the D70 rather than the EOS 300D. I know you are talking about a newer model, b ut the principle is the same. I have a G3 and a film Epoca and they are both great cameras, and the 300 was cheaper, but I can honestly say that getting the D70 was absolutely the better decision.

The Nikon v Canon threads over at dpreview get well out of hand, quite good fun to read, but I don't understand what drives them, unless they are also into self justification like me

I've seen them al the time once I switched to dpreview, just ignore them, I'm happy with what I got, I bought and I use. I knew each of them has pros & cons, we can not have one completely with no comments.
People just want to troll, measurebastor, start a flame on everything they could. Ashamed! Got it all over any digicam forums at dpreview.
What my thoughts are:
- are they a real and keen in doing photography? Why not go shooting?
- Can they afford to pull out their CC for the new released Digi Cam? What have they learned from their digicam and new digicam?
- Is that an AmWay? or another way of marketing from Canon or Nikon?
- I'm tired of it and want to duck into our D70 forum.

hehe, another funny point I note: I never mentioned the name of the forums, and yet you guys knew what I was referring to... it's reputation preceeds it.

It's certainly interesting to observe.

On the one hand, I think that it's somewhat natural for us to want to have our purchase decisions vindicated. This is true whether we've bought a camera, car, tv ... or perhaps even a meal at our favourite restaurant: who doesn't like to "sow off" or "share" this great little restaurant that they've just discovered?

Conversely, we're somewhat insecure, and might react defensively to what we consider unjustified criticism of that decision.

Many tke it as a somewhat personal "attack" even, when in fact, whether we're talking about a 300d, D70, 20D, 10D, or D100, they're all fine cameras - none perfect - that will do most jobs asked of them more than adequately, and in each camera's case, somewhat differently from the rest.

I've been using Nikon for something like 25 years now, and have also used Canons during that time too. One thing that impresses me about Nikon is the engineering integrity of their designs. That I can use brand new lens designs on 15 year old canera bodies speaks much of this. Similarly, that the control layout is ergonomically designed so that one has a minimal learning curve in this regard also says a lot to me.

I'm very happy with my choice, and I'm enjoying the camera. I'm interested in playing with the D20 and I'm sure it will be a great camera. Will it make me change? I suspect not.

However, it's regretful to see potential buyers making sub-optimal purchasing decisions based on misconceptions and half-truths. eg. people never considering the D70 simply because they read of and perceived the chance of getting a "faulty" one are high, and therefore settling for the inferior alternative.

Accepting that Canon has a bigger market share - which to me means in any given photographic forum, there will statistically be more Canon users, who push their viewpoints and berate or belittle the system they don't own and don't use - citing "friends" they have shoot it, giving them the authority to pass judgement.

I always smile when I see these brand wars and quietly think "I am not what I own".

Otherwise I would see myself as an old, poorly made, oversized and useless device with a big hole in my head. Which really describes my convertible Cadillac better than me. Or maybe racy and temperemantal like my Ducati. Or maybe just a bad split personality.

Glen, I think you'll understand exactly what I mean when I get out of my GTV in, say, a carpark, look around, and I know that (IMHO) I have the best car in that lot!
