the G11 goes down to 10mp from 14.7 in the G10. Canon had the balls to do what the rest of the market, since fuji's f30, has been too gutless to do...actually reduce MP's on a top end compact.

how it performs is yet to be seen but the principal of what canon just did should make everyone breathe a sigh of relief. its what most of us have been begging for...ENOUGH WITH THE MP'S ALREADY !!!!

with a nice big fully articulating LCD, RAW, hotshoe and VF no less. this thing looks bad ass man.

Before the light painting meet last evening, Leigh and I attended a PR event in the city, and got to see some interesting toys.

Nikon were there ... no D300S, no new 70-200, but the new coolpix with the built-in projector was available for a play.

It was pretty much exactly what I expected, and then some. Quite nice, surprisingly bright projection, easy to use. I'm looking forward to getting one in for review to see exactly what can be done with this.

Some of the other toys on display : some new wireless headsets from Sennheiser (wireless iPhone to headset connection - stereo plus phone capability - anyone), an Au$1000 stereo video projector from Viewsonic, some cool netbooks also from Viewsonic, new speakers and iPod docks from Altec Lansing, and the obligatory free beer.

I think Canon are onto a good thing there, 10mp is more than enough for almost everyone!

A wee little dissapointed that the video is not HD. It's a compact camera after all.

Yeehaa, just what I've been waiting for. I have bought and sold both the G9 and the G10 in the last 2 years. Great cameras but not quite there. Reduced MPs and swivel screen is the bees knees. 6-8mp would have been better than 10 but it will do fine.

Order me one please.

The G10 has 3 of those 4 already. I'm not sure about the value of the swivel LCD, personally. I see people all the time taking pictures with their cameras held at arms length because they're using the LCD rather than the VF, and I often wonder if they ever question why their pictures aren't sharp. IS can only compensate so much, especially since the LCD once swung out effectively prohibits a firm grip by the left hand. The finger grip on the right side is quite shallow in practice, at least for someone used to a DSLR, and I never feel comfortable trying to shoot with only one hand keeping things steady.

On spec there seems little reason for a G10 owner to upgrade (especially at $600+). That said, I am very curious to see how much the reduced pixel density plus Digic 4 translates to reduced noise throughout the ISO range. The G10 is capable of excellent IQ at ISO 80 or 100 but its limitations become apparent very quickly beyond that, so if the G11's higher ISO range is usable in practice then Canon will have achieved something significant.

I don't mean to sound negative about the G11. For a first time purchase of a high-end compact it seems like Canon have taken a very good thing and made it a wee bit better again.

The G10 body feels like you could throw it through a glass window without undue concern. That said, my partner had a G9 that did sterling service in exotic locales beyond our shores before being dropped with the lens out on the bedroom floor at home... Admittedly, the G9 had a longer zoom than the the G10/11.

Very sensible move on the MP front..

I am surprised more cameras don't have the swivelling/articulated LCD screen, it
actually turns out to be a jolly handy feature (particularly as a waist level viewfinder,
old-school box brownie style. Great for street candids for example.)

i would suggest that this is more a case of people not understanding how to use it rather than the feature itself being a problem. i think an articulating lcd is the single most important feature missing from dslr right now.

i dont quite understand the issue. i have a coolpix 5700, (no stabilisation), which has gotta be 8 years old, a 1 inch articualting lcd which i used often. i also have an lx3 with no viewfinder and i've never had a blurry image problem.

honestly, a little common sense considering the focal length and shutter speed you're using is all that's needed.
