do people have their gear insured ? if so with whom ? how much ? any recommendations ? am after insurance for items outside the home. i was enquiring about adding it to my contents insurance but the prices seemed quite high for full coverage.

and just in case people weren;t aware of this; i rang AAMI to discuss this with them and discovered something i didnt know. your camera gear, (in the home under home contents insurance), is ONLY fully covered if you specify the items in your policy. this came as a bolt from the blue for me cos i wasnt aware of that. i just thought if i had receipts and photos of my items then it would be covered. not so according to AAMI. a full listing of the gear you want covered must be specified in the policy.

While I don't consider that to be too onerous a task (and really, we all should have a list of our equipment, along with the serial numbers - a simple Excel or Google Docs spreadsheet would suffice), the heads up on this is greatly appreciated, Chris.

Good advice, and thanks.

what insurer and to what value mate ? AAMI is a max of $1k out of home cover. covering $10k of gear is around the $280/year mark additional.

That is the case with GIO - coverage up to about $1k of gear and anything above must be separately listed. I believe the additional cover was about 0.15% per month of the amount of cover. This covers loss/damage/theft in and outside of the home, but not if used in a business. Specific coverage would need to be confirmed with GIO as we took out this policy about 3 years ago and policy conditions may have changed for new policies.

I have mine separately insured through AON. Sum insured, just a tad over 21k with a premium of $780 per year. Excess is $100. I keep all my gear listed in a spreadsheet along with serial number and when purchased.

Hi,

We have been using AON as their camera insurance is just that camera specific covering professional use. From previous discussions on this forum in the past we found them highly recommended. Can't remember the over all cover amount we have but we documented everything we wanted to cover as part of the submission to AON. We spend about $1450.00 per year.

Victorians get cheaper insurance [in general] it seems. [I have limited experience in this however]

Like Hudo & ATJ I also have all my gear covered with AON.

Have not needed to make a claim through them and that is probably one of the best tests of an insurance company so cant comment there. But they are recommended by the AIPP so hopefully that means something :)
