Murray River Roadtrip.

Postby norbs on Thu Sep 17, 2009 12:20 pm

Well this years photographic road trip is coming up and I am after tips and places to see along the Murray River. I am going to try and start as near to the source as possible, and then spend 2 weeks driving along the Murray, probably as far as the SA border.

If I have time, I might even go up to Mungo NP from Mildura.

Any advice from people that either live along the route or have done a similar trip would be greatly appreciated.

Route here.

I don't know what you're driving, but Hattah-Kulkyne and Murray Sunset National Parks are top spots.

There's a great place to camp on the riverbank just up-river (?) of Hattah-Kulkyne - S 34°38'57.7" E 143°33'54.8" - Go in on River Track off of Hattah-Robinvale Road - most cars would get in there no problem...

Mungo is well worth a visit too...

The old mail route from Wentworth to Renmark is supposed to be good if you're after something a little different - check out Exploroz for details on that one and others in the area.

I'm looking at spending some more time around that area, perhaps doing the Border Track (along the SA/Vic border) and the other Victorian Deserts in that area - not sure when though, maybe next year sometime (although there's a few other places on the list for next year too, and I don't know how often my wife will let me go ;) ).

We spend quite a bit of time anywhere from Menindee (Darling River) right through to Remark, I dont have a great deal of advise other than to take your time and do plenty of exploring, as leon said there are plenty of really great campsites in and out of the national parks. And if you prefer a bit of luxury some really brilliant Caravan parks on the river.

Border track is a great long weekend type of trip Leon, some pics from mine HERE with a trip writeup, I'd definitely be keen to do that again. Forum trip anybody?

We just returned from Mildura. We arrived on the night they had their first decent downpour in years. :(
Nice lady at the Caravan Park said "You can't set up a tent in this!" and gave us a cabin for the night. :D
But it meant that one of the reasons for going up there - Mungo - was now out of the question for the Commodore. :(
Means we have to go back! :)
