Hi my question is in good light outdoors on a monopod with an experienced user is there a sharpness diffeence??
Say on asunny day using Av f8-f11 and setting 200iso .As this would be a common senario I am wondering on the benefits of chasing a copy of the f2.8 Vr, maybee i could get by with the F4
cheers --inmotion

at f8 there is pretty much no difference in IQ whatsoever.

I wish I could comment, but I have used neither lens...but Rooz has used both!

Without ever using a lens longer than 85mm, I would guess that the difference will be significant at f4.

Perhaps speak top member Jeff, he has used both lenses, and now has the 2.8 version.

From my usage, sharpeness is the same, of course you get the extra stop, other than that, not much difference.

apart from the obvious advantages you pointed out, there are 2 other big differences in the 300/2.8.
1. focus speed. this is huge, and i mean a HUGE difference.
2. easier use of TC's. a 1.4 tc on a 300VR gives you a 420/4 lens without any noticeable diffence in IQ or focus speed.

once you stop the lens' down to around 7.1 though the IQ difference is barely perceptible. what i am noticing is that the 300VR has a slightly warmer tone.
