If you are a member of the wedding party, don't even think about it.
You have enough to concern yourself with on the day.

And how well do you know your future ex-wife?
And her proposed divorce lawyer?

Isn't it easier to find a woman you don't like and give her half your stuff?

Only half?

Man, I've done a thousand weddings, next year my daughter is getting married, I'm not even a member of the bridal party and I wouldn't dream of trying to be the official photographer.

I have been joking about this with some friends recently, but I have never contemplated it seriously. You would want to be very good with a tripod and a timer or have an extra long cable release. I would like to see you try and get the "first kiss" shot during the ceremony. Hillarious.

If you're having a DIY Wedding then one of you must be a marriage celebrant or have gained a quick official position in an obscure religion as a priest, rabbi, sheik, shaman, accountant, whatever. Combining that with doing the photography as well should be quite entertaining. I think it would be essential to have a camera that bounces well when you throw it to each other or to the audience and back. (or maybe a DIY wedding means you are getting married to yourself?)
