Turn around time for repairs and Poroday

Hi all,

Sadly my 24-70 has become nearly impossible to zoom, the mechanism has become very rough :(
I was wondering if anyone here had recent experience with repairs at Poroday (or Nikon AUS I spose)? I am shooting a wedding next weekend and need it by then. Thanks in advance.

I have a funny feeling that if it's still under warranty this repair might not happen in one week. [see Cameron's story with his d300]

I am sure someone here can comment on urgent repairs.

Other option is to rent one for the weekend.

Thanks for the reply surenj - I will definitely have to organise for a rental if it's not going to be fixed in a week.

I have only had one experience with Nikon Aus in terms of repairs - I was quite pleased, after recieving the quote they mentioned it would take at least 1-2 weeks to do the job due to workload etc, however I explained i really needed it by the end of that week, the chap there said he would see what he could do and would not promise anything. The flash was ready for pickup by the end of the week! I think for the price you are typically paying, that kind of service this is what I woudl expect.

With that said, it gonna depend on the type of repair, complexity etc - just take cams example :roll: :roll:

I would ensure you have a 'plan B' :up:

Fingers crossed for you there Geoff. That post that everyone is referring to is:

In my dealings with Foto Reisel (who have been great) I learnt that Poroday has now been exclusively contracted to Nikon Australia...so you may not have him as an option. However, I am currently getting my FM2n serviced through Camera Service Centre on Castlereagh St, customer service has been sterling, but I am still waiting on parts to ship from Nikon Australia (I am really not having much luck with them at the moment). Maybe give Richard at Camera Service Centre a call or email and see if he can quote you up (free email estimations).

I would def be sourcing another lens to use for the coming wedding. Maybe someone can lend you a copy?

Is this a warranty claim Geoff?

Seems a good number of these lens have this problem...mine has a hesitation approaching the wider end but is far from unusable...but might have to do something about it in the long run.
Be interesting to see how much your repair costs.
Give me a yell if you need a 24-70 on the weekend

my dealings with Nikon Aus (Lidcombe) have been fairly good also, they completed the work well within the estimated time.others on the forum havent been so lucky,guess mine were more straightforward to fix - my 70-200 2.8 was in the boot of the car when hit from behind by a fully laden car transporter,lens was catapulted into back of rear seat and lens hood forced down the barrel! ouch..............no glass broken though - now a convert to the 'keep the lens hood on' theory!!..................the other repair was replacement filter mount and service on my 18-200.

Thanks for the responses people!
I personally delivered the lens to Nikon Aus at Lidcombe this morning and told them that I really needed the lens to shoot a wedding this weekend and they said that if they had parts in stock then they SHOULD be able to have it ready by Friday afternoon, but no promises. I have been fortunate to borrow Craig's lens if I need it for Saturday. The lens is JUST inside warranty period (phew!!) and I bought it from TEDS on 04.12.09 so that's fortunate! Will keep you posted on progress.

Great outcome!
Lens has been repaired (in just over 24hrs) under warranty and is ready for collection! PHEW!!! Hats off to Nikon Lidcombe AUS and Daniel (service centre). Great service!!

Yep, I'm a very happy chappy. Cameron, I am not an NPS member, but I pleaded for a quick return. I am hopeful that my demeanour was helpful to my cause. I am considering becoming an NPS member, but I need to purchase another camera body to do so. That said, I never shoot a wedding without two bodies, I'm just fortunate enough to loan one from a member on this very forum :)

Can I enquire about the demeanour that you have used? I have tried polite, I have tried frustrated, I have tried understanding, I have tried angry.....

Great to hear that you can get a loaner from other forum members...with both the D300 and the S5 away right now I am glad I have the D60 (the S5 should come back this arvo though)

I was just patient/understanding (but desperate). I'm sure you were exactly the same. Did you get back your S5?
