Meetup Project Light Junkies

hi

i've been collecting all manner of lights from led's to flurros and making custom rigs up to finally create some visual alchemy
I require a group of like minded visual alchemists to help me with a project in december

all we need is a piece of string and a sense of adventure

see here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24491005@N06/sets/72157617336774271/

if experiments are successful im going to develop it further into more more interesting projects who ever is on board will enjoy the ride and reak the benefits.

interested parties reply in this thread

I am in.

My first EL (green, 2.3, 1.5m) is on it's way from HK.

I really want to learn and experiment on how to integrate these into general lightpainting.

Cathy (chica on here) and in Adelaide, but would be interested in maybe coming over some time in December - it sounds interesting - and your photos speak volumes

Cheers

Wendell I am sure you will stack loads of people keen to turn up  I am keen, even if its just to tag along and have a look....

Suren, are these the EL lights you are getting? I got a few of these unused at home from previous computer pimping jobs...

Yep!!
I didn't know they used these for computing.

what you need is a portable power supply. The ebay ones I got seem to operate on 2XAA batteries; but probably not for long.
I have ordered green. [My intentions were to have a color that's different to the rest of the scene so I can select> color range and Whalla > any color I want. ] The ideal color would have been pink but they only had 5m lengths which I thought would be tad too long.

This looks interesting Wendell.

I assume you mean WHERE I ordered my EL wire?

If you search ebay for "EL wire", you get plenty of results.

Since it's a weeknight, I can make it around 7pm at the earliest. [Even 7pm has a little bit of twilight these days]

everyione needs to bring their lights and a piece of string strong enough to tie the light(s) at one end for a concentric waving pattern(you)

i need a clean black background so i think darling harbour is too messy as a backdrop anyone got any ideas preferrably a park maybe centenial park

i don't drink beer but ill bring the beer, more for everyone else

closes at dusk from memory. Sydney park (St Peters) might be an option, plenty of hills and few lights...

Gerry, This area doesn't make me comfortable esp in the dark. I reckon there could be druggies lurking this park at night. What do the others think?

How about the beaches? We could pretty much pick any beach??

During the sculptures on the sea festival there were plenty of people around this area. But then, now, this may be a different issue. I would feel more secure here than any inner city park though. That includes Centennial park at night.

Whilst I give no guarantees, this park is not too bad, there are alot of apartment complexs around the park now which results in lots of people walking dogs and running/riding into all hours. I go there fairly often, the last time being with the push bike, in this case there was half a dozen runners whilst I was on top of the hill. This place has changed alot in the last 5 years!

In any case, any place at night where it is dark will pose a possible hazard - the only thing we do have going for us is that it should be a decent sized group.

Agreed! We just need to take necessary precautions and be in a large group.

Earlier I was thinking about this and it maybe an idea to keep the meeting place among the attendees and potentially interested parties and not on a public forum. We can always PM or email each other. thoughts?

Or you could all come up the hill a little where there are no worries in the dark apart from the odd drop bear.
We also have some great backdrops up here.
20th may be a bummer for me as I think the boss has us booked elsewhere.

If I was that way inclined and wanted to collect a booty of several D700s, a few D3s and an old 350D, I would be happy to drive to middle of Hazelbrook. No one will hear the screams. Fortunately I am not a nikon kinda guy. :chook:

Hey Gerry, if you shoot your signature in isolation on a plain black background similar to the one in the last shot, it would make a great copywright watermark.

What about if you had something that offset the light to one side? You may have to support it with your other hand as well but it might be possible. Then you could face away from the camera and write the correct way but the light would still be visible.

nope, i leave that for monday nights at Yoga... :rotfl2:

something that offset the light to one side?

now thats a smart cookie...

to get the perfect orbs is gonna take some practice if your only using a string and a LED. I would also suggest having some weight on the end to get a consistent trajectory when spinning it around..

Pole twirlers or fire twirlers would be the go for this, fixed lengths and you can get the same diameter for each revolution of the light...

I have done a bit of fire twirling whilst spending time with the SU Circus Society....I can do some basic staff movements but I think your more after Poi.
