I am having trouble getting the Kenko N-AFd 2X TelePlus MC7 Teleconvertor to work, with my D70.

It worked fine on my Nikon F80.

Everything looks fine, but no matter what settings I seem to have on the camera, my pictures are always blurred when using this teleconvertor.

Anyone have any ideas?

If its a compatibility issue, does anyone recommend a 2x Teleconvertor that works? Or should I get a 1.7x?

I am aiming on primarily using it with my AF Nikkor 70-300mm 5.6 G lense, to turn it into a 600mm lense, I know I'll only be able to use it in very bright conditions.

I don't think any TC will work well with your 70-300G.
The TC-1.4/1.7/2.0 is triple the price of your 70-300G lens

Welcome to the forum moocow. When you used the the converter on the F80 which lens did you use it with? Also consider that with a 2x converter your f/5.6 will be around f/11 and that is not going to help in the least with digital.

Moocow, I go with everyone else's thought that the 70-300 isn't up to it. Try something like an old 500 f8 Nikon, would cost the same as a teleconverter or an old long manual Nikon lens. Would probably give you better results. A good teleconverter is worth more than the 70-300.

I was using the same 70-300 Nikkor G lense on the F80. I was pretty happy with the results that I was getting with the teleconvertor. It was limited to being used in only very bright conditions though. I thought that the 2X teleconvertor only added 2 F stops, so my f5.6 would go to f7.6. I am also having troubles with the teleconvertor and the 18-70DX lense.

Should I look at getting a better 2nd hand lense? From what I've read, the D70 runs lenses at 1.5 than that of non-digital SLR's. Is that correct?
So really my 70-300mm G lense is running as a 105-450mm?

If you have an older lense with an aperature ring you will see that an "F Stop" is not 1 it is an increment, F2.8, F4, F5.6, F8, F11 hence F5.6 + 2 stops = F11.

Anything inbetween is in 1/3rd or 1/2half increments. Its a wacky scale, read that website for further explaination.

Moocow, stops are not linear, they go 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. Each one represents a doubling of aperture size or halving depending on which way you are going. So 5.6 lets in half the light of 4, etc.

Two stops means your 5.6 becomes 11 and that is if you shoot wide open, that lens would perform better stopped down at leat a stop or two, which means F16 or F22. That means a sunny day or slow shutter speed

Every 'stop' increases the value by the square root of 2, so 2 stops increases the value by a factor of 2. Hence f/5.6 -> f/11 (no-one cares about the .2 once you get over 10).

In terms of motorsport photography, have a look around the image section, particularly for posts by BBJ and redline. Lenses of choice include 80-200 2.8, 80-400 VR, 70-200 VR, 300 f/4 (or 2.8 ). The 70-300G is a decent lens for the price, but putting a teleconverter behind it is false economy IMHO (do you really need >400 mm?), you'd be better off saving up for some extra glass.

Edit: bloody hell you have to be fast these days!

ps Moocow, you are right, the field of view of your 300 is the same as a 450mm

Could you please define "blurred" ?

Doe the Kenko permit you to use the D70's autofocus modes, or are you focussing manually? If the latter, your focussing aids on the D70 - the groundglass - are probably not as good as they are on the F80.

And if focussing manually, how is your viewfinder's dioptre adjustment set?

As others have suggested, the 70-300G is a low cost/low quality lens, and good results with it are difficult to come by. Reducing the light, and introducing more glass into the optical path are not likely to help matters too much.

Comparing your results on the F80 ... you're comparing a 6x4 print (I guess) with ... perhaps a full pixel scale image on your monitor? If so, then yes, it will look pretty nasty if the subject matter is out of focus.

Define blurred - the images taken with the 70-300G + teleconvertor, apear blurred on the PC screen. It's as if the picture was taken with manual focus and it wasn't in focus. I have tried manual and auto focus, but I get the same results.

And if focussing manually, how is your viewfinder's dioptre adjustment set?
It is all at stock settings, I haven't played with it, as the viewfinders focus seems fine with the DX lense I have and with the 70-300G without teleconvertor.

Maybe its time to invest in a better lense and scrap the basic 70-300g and teleconvertor idea?

You may wear youself out on this TC thing, start scouring The Trading Post and Ebay for a second hand lens, the manual ones go cheap or buy a 70-200 new from Birddog 114 and be in love

Would this lense be good for sport photography?

No not really. This lens is F8, sports usually require a faster lens like F2.8 (which costs money). How about telling us what you want to do with it, rather than us guessing blind here. What sort of sports? Indoor or outdoor? Artificial lighting? Fast moving or slower sports?
