Since I got the 70-200 I now almost regret buying the 24-120 and think I should have saved the money and bought the 17-55. The 24-120 is good value ( we know where at... not anywhere else! ) and a good all-rounder, but I guess it's a bit like jumping into a Holden after a drive in a Bentley...

If you are going to think like that, then there are alot of things that you could have purchased for the money that you spent on the 70-200vr

I have to agree with Glamy. While I was looking at the 24-120VR at one stage, the low light capabilities of the lens really put me off. Yes the VR can compensate for it, but I didn't really see the point of VR on something of this focal length (maybe I should experience it before I judge). Plus I think the minimum focal length isn't enough for me. I like something around the 17/18 mark for a lens that matches close to traditional 35mm film formats. The only thing that has put me off the 17-55 recently is that it's DX. While it is quite possible that Nikon will run with the DX format till I'm an old man and no longer capable of operating a camera, there is just the odd chance that they might take a different path. If that is the case those DX lenses might not take a sudden drop in value. I'd rather just stick with lenses that can be used on sensors that have no crop factor. It might be all for no purpose at all but that's my line of thinking now.

The thing is, I am happy to have spent the money on the 70-200 and as I don't have to pay for the other important activity in our life it was money well spent!

Hi D70 users,

the 200-400 is superb !, however also is its price ! (NOT)
Anyone who has that kind of money to spend will have a ride of a lifetime!
That lens is amazing !
Also be brave and bold, because if you show up with that thing anywhere, people will envy your thing, no matter what.
It will provoke looks and comments.
I got comments on my 70-200 VR.
(this is the largest lens I've seen.
Someone, who I will not name suggestest a reciprocal relationship between such a lens and personal male equippment)
The 200-400VR is out of this world and so is its price.
