600 Members Soon

We hardly even notice these milestones anymore, the forum has grown to such an amazing degree.

In October last year (yep, only five months ago) the excitment was about getting the membership numbers into three figures. This thread..

http://forum.d70users.com/viewtopic.php?t=525

was a discussion about when the 100th member would join up.

Greg,

It's amazing how the word gets around

Personally, I'd prefer small, but I'm resigned to the fact that growth will happen.

Interestingly (well I think so anyway), we have 245 people on the memberlist who have not made a single post. Maybe 10 or so of them are recent arrivals, but we could say that well over 200 have never made a post.

There are 400 people who have made 12 posts or fewer. Again, some will be recent arrivals.

We have around 150 active members, ie, with 30 posts or more.

Greg that scenario is typical of most forums. Why I don't know. :?

I've never understood that.

Why join in the first place if you're not going to join in? It's always confused me.

I put my brother onto this site in January and he joined up and made a dozen or so posts.

 Sadly, he died in February.

I don't expect to see any more posts from him.

Nice graph. Hmm, the growth rate is rather constant, isn't it? I always thought forums grow at a base-2 exponential rate, 2->4->8->16->etc...hehehe.

The following graph shows the number of new members joining daily.

Notice the spike a week or so after everyone has unwrapped their christmas presents!

I think you will find that in the last month or so, the uptake is about 3 or 4 new members per day.

Hey Mark, you love a graph! And so do I.

Very informative.

The spike in January was more likely due to the thread on the firmware update that was posted on DPR in early January, and resulted in something like 5000 hits on just that one thread in a period of just a day or two.

That thread currently has 5501 hits ....

Yea, I sure do Greg.

p.s. I was following your thread about the new prime nember and in particular stubbsy's comment:

stubbsy wrote:And of course prime numbers themselves are such beautiful things.

Makes me want to race out and photograph a "3" for the latest challenge. (3 is a prime number, isn't it?)

Yes it is. It is the first prime number, and (obviously therefore) the first Mersenne prime.

(1 is not considered a prime)

3 is also the least number of sides you can have on a polygon, and the number of participants necessary for a legitimate menage a trois.

Enlighten us about illegitimate menage a trois, Greg. Sounds interesting

Any menage involving other than three participants Glen. It isn't like a TLA where you can have an enhanced TLA with four Ls in it. No siree Bob, that wouldn't be right.

So an illegitimate menage a trois would involve four or more participants. I guess if you had six, it could be considered a double menage a trois, but I reckon if you are in the middle of something like that, knowing what to call it is not your first consideration.

Is 2 a prime number?

If so, was 3 found before 2, and that's why it's the first prime (perhaps it's the prime prime  ).

Thanks for that Greg, you can now expect a high degree of accuracy when I report my menage's on this board in future

Well frock me up and call me Alice!!!!

Yes, 2 is a prime number Mark.

It is the only even prime. My apologies to all members who may have been inconvenienced by my hopeless inaccuracy on this critical point.

Therefore, 3 is the second prime and the first Mersenne prime. DOH!

You can add one more to the list :D

I've had my camera for just over a month now, though why it's taken me this long to find you I don't know.

Anyway, I've just spent the most of yesterday and today (when I should be working) reading through some of the posts here and in the "hints & tips" section and already I just want to say thank you all for the wealth of information you've provided.

I've learnt so much already that I think it might have to write the whole week off as far as getting anything productive done and just carry on reading.

Again, thanks to all of you and I hope I can contribute in some small way (I'm still very much a newbie to the D70 and photography in general).

Thanks for the welcome guys. One of the things I'm supposed to be doing is finishing of my photo gallery, when that's complete I'll obviously post up a link.

Incidentally sirhc55, where abouts in London did you live? I'll add it to my "places to visit" list. :)

I think it's going steady at about 100 per month, although it tooke from aug to Oct 15 to get the first 100, then it was 1 1/2 to get the next month, then it went to about 1 month for the 3, I bet we cruise at about 100 / month for a little while.

I'd fear that in doing so, you're PM box would be completely filled within the first 42 seconds and a thread would be created with the title "Come back Birddog!!!" and everyone would post... even those who never have...

They'd probably say something like "I don't know who he is but he seems like a great chap. Come back Mr. Bird-dog. We miss you."

Ok... I think I lost the plot. Ages ago, for that matter.
