Olympus EP2 or Canon G11 ????

Which one would you choose and why
looking at getting a camera for my wife ( and me :) )
I know the G11 is a good camera but, Is it at the end of it's life and about to be upgraded somehow ?

but I like that you can use change lens with the EP2 and use Nikon and my M mount rangefinder lens with different adapters

is a Micro 4/3rds camera the future in the "more than a P&S less than a DSLR" range of camera

does the G11 suffer focus/shutter lag and is the EP2 better ?

thanks for any help, opinions offered

For me I would go EP2

bigger sensor and interchangeable lenses are the reasons I want one.

I've been thinking of getting a G11 however for the geek in me and the range of options available EP2 for me or the Panasonic GF1.

neither, i prefer the panasonic cos its AF is better and its cheaper. that little gh1 and 20/1.7 pancake looks like a sublime little setup. if it had in-body IS i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Neither.....I would be looking at:

-Panasonic GF-1 (as Rooz said....in body IS needed)
-Olympus E-PL1 (Smaller and lighter and with a pop up flash)
-Samsung NX10 (reasonable size, APS-C sensor)

:agree:

Knowing that the NX10's RRP is considerably tempting... Samung NX10 it is for me out of my liking =) + you're not going to be buying aging technology... seems like the good way to go, APS-C sensor in a RF styled compactness...

DPR posted their nx10 review recently, very good but nothing too flash considering its an aps-c sensor.

i still like the gf1 personally. anyone know why lumix decided not to have in-body IS in their m4/3 models ?

I don't know either, but I do know that they have said that they will be staying with in-lens IS. Perhaps it's some sort of product differentiation they're looking for or something.

I have the GF1 for my lightweight hiking kit, along with the viewfinder, 20mm and 7-14mm. I had a good look at the Oly, and it's true that each system has it's merits, but in the end I felt the GF1 was snappier than the Olympus, and I preferred the Panasonic menus. They're both nice bits of kit, I'd be happy with either really.

I've modified my long term camera philosophy this year. Rather than continuing to be a hoarder, I now realise that it's a lot better plan to turn stuff over if its not getting used. My 10D was worth well over $1k when I bought the 5D, but when I sold it recently to finance the u4/3 kit, it struggled to make $400 - and its hardly been used since the 5D came on board. So if/when there is significant improvement in the u4/3 kit (really, the main improvements that would interest are in dynamic range and high ISO noise. The rest is window dressing IMO), the GF1 will be unceremoniously dumped on ebay or traded. :)

Getting back to the original question, I think the best course of action is to go and hold them to see if the cameras meet your size expectations - the u4/3rds cameras are small by DSLR standards, but with any sort of zoom, they are a lot bulkier than a G11.

I like the GF1 over the Pens. Partly because the AF seems snappier. But the price for all of these goes up quite a bit when you add the EVF so you can use it in bright sunlight, so I'm sticking with my G1 for now.

By the way, recently Ctein wrote about an experiment mixing a Panasonic IS lens with his EP-1.

Dave,

You're right about the pricing, even more so if you buy in Australia. As a result my EVF and 7-14 were sourced from Japan, saving over $1000 on the best price I could find locally. Made the difference between buying them now or waiting for the mythical price drop.

The US price of the EVF has dropped recently, some say that its a sign a higher res unit is in the works. meh.

Interesting stuff, that IS testing, thanks for the link.

Because Panasonic has a lens based IS technology dating back to their DSLRs?

you would have thought this was a perfect opportunity to change that though wouldnt you ? new format, new glass... such a major competitive advantage for oly.

If only the world was so logical. Yes it would have been a nice opportunity but then again they would have had to either design a system from the ground up or license someone elses system.....
