Nikon D3S in Melbourne

I've been looking into low light capabilies of the new Nikon D3S and I'm now interested giving it a try. I recently added the D3x to my lineup and while it's an amazing body the low light capabilites are no where near as good as the D3S.

Does anyone know where I could possibly hire or borrow a Nikon D3S in Melbourne for the night? It looks like it has potential but I'd really like to try it out for a couple of hours before forking out for a new body.

All the best,
Andrew

There may potentially be a twilight helicopter ride over Melbourne in it for anyone able to help out.... in one of these :) .

Andrew,

have you tried Kayell?
http://www.kayellaustralia.com.au/photosite/

They don't have the D3s listed in their rental section but they may still be willing to do something for you.

Also, I would think that you would qualify for NPS and it is something like this that they would come in handy. A friend of mine was trying to decide on if he should get the D3 and a 24-70. That's a number of months back when the D3 and lens combo was still new. Being an NPS member, he was able to get the D3 and the lens for a few days.

good luck

André

Thanks André, that's great advice!

I don't know why I didn't think to sign up with NPS in the first place. The only think that might prevent me from being accepted would be that I purchased my D3x through DDP (grey market). I'm a Niconaholic... surely that alone will convince them to send me membership ;) .

I'll give Kayell a call in the morning and see if they're thinking about adding the D3s to their rental list.

Any other suggestions welcomed :) .

Cheers
Andy

If you have a pro body (bought from Aust stock) and a few pro lenses (also Aust stock) it shouldnt be a problem. I would def ask about NPS if I were you.

andy, the d3s just went up by $500 at D-D. it was listed at 6199 last week, today i checked and its 6699. the price at ecs is still the same at 6995. d3s's are currently backordered in the US so i think DD are just taking advantage of the supply/demand.

thats a huge increase in price in the space of a week when the AUD has been relatively stable.

Thanks for the heads up Rooz.

I went ahead without it as I couldn't get my hands on one until after Easter. I ended up shooting night shots from the helicopter with the D3x down to 1/20. Images are tack sharp and client is veeeery pleased. I'll post some pics later.

Melbourne's a beautiful city by night.

Care to share some of the shots? I would love to come along with you on a job as an observer/assistant just for the experience, but I guess that would be hard

I've got the d3, s and x if you want a play with it. I'm not in Melbourne often but I'm sure we can sort something out.
