What sort of insurance are out there that cover damages & theft to camera & lenses? If my gear is stolen at home, I am covered by house insurance, if its stolen from my car, I am not sure whether its covered by the car insurance. If I drop it in the river, I know I am not covered.

Normally you can extend your h&c insurance to cover accidental damage inside or outside of home and overseas. It's usualy cheaper than going down the line of specialist photographic insurance with AIS as an example.

Beware though that H&C will not cover losses while using your gear in a business situation

I second that.

We added all of our camera gear to our H&C coverage, listing each piece individually - didn't add very much to the cost. An additional bonus we found was that we are covered world-wide for the first 90 days of any trip for any damage/loss etc. Definitely worth checking if this works for you. fyi - our insurance is through Elders Insurance

Cheers

added mine as seperate individual items for full coverage on my h/c insurance. includes theft/ accidental damage and all that jazz. in and out of home. most importantly replacement cost. ie: if your camera model goes out of date you get the value of its replacement, not some market value of your old camera 2nd hand.

costs me $450/year for 20k worth of gear.
