*edit* shots lower down

Hi all,

I have a shoot coming up with a couple that are very different heights and thought I'd throw this out there for suggestions.

The guy is 6'9" and the girl is around 5'8". Has anyone done a shoot with a couple that different?

Suggestions for poses would be much appreciated.

I have a daughter & son in law with a similar disparity in heights.
Things that work reasonably:
Short on sits on tall ones lap.
Lean tall one against tree or similar
Short one on a step
Tall one sitting down
Tall one picks up shortie
Accept the disparity.
Diagonal framing

Dave,

Short person sitting in a chair while the taller person stands ....

Tall person stands on a step with the shorter person at ground level ....



What Greg suggested.

Or both seated ...

Outdoors, find a hill, taller person on the downhill side, or both reclining ...

Also consider if there's a need for full length shots. By shooting upper body only, you may use whatever props you need, but they can be out of camera view.

Also, both lying down provides other options - (minds out of the gutter) - heads next to each other; her head on his stomach; lying head to head, but in opposite directions.

He could also lie down whilst she reclines or sits against/near him

For some shots, he could stand back a short way to reduce his apparent height.

Get a chainsaw.

Thanks guys - lots of helpful stuff there - I think the lying/sitting down stuff could be very useful as it will be an outdoors/garden shoot.

David, good luck with the shoot and I look forward to seeing which of these fine suggestions worked best for you on the day. It is a tough one for sure.

Dig a small hole.

Bit late but one more suggestion that may help. Short one in front of the tall one. and shoot from a lower angle and smaller aperture

Heres a real simple one :

- Cheek to cheek, tight crop.

I did a practice shoot for the couple over the weekend - will be doing theeir wedding later in the year. Focus (arf arf) was on the locations but I got them to try a few of the things you mentioned. (too wet to lie down unfortunately).

C&C would be MUCH appreciated - Please ignore the dodgy PP as these are just to look at posing.

Whenever there's a technique being described or learned, and the need to exceed the guidelines arises, that is never at issue. The four pics rule is mainly to help in looking at images for critique. This is a very different set of circumstances, and the priority here is to help you to learn something.

And in all honesty, you've done bloody well here.

I don't think that any of these images display the issues that you're concerned about, which means that you have learned to recognise and overcome the problem in a very short space of time.

Really nice .. but you need to get him to not slouch(as he does in several shots) just to bring his head lower.

Good point and thanks - I'll make sure to keep and eye on that.

unfortunately things in our modern world are not built to suit people outside of the 'bell curve' as some may know i am vertically challenged and slouching is one aspect that results from self preservation more than anything else...

dodgy old school doors, cars through to stupid IKEA desks they all contribute to make the tall men slouch

anyway, I digress..

definitely agree, don't be afraid to to repeat this to him cause its easy to forget...'get those shoulders back and stand up straight' a young man can look very old when he slouches..

the only images where the pose looks kinda strange is #4 and #6..

actually #4 is not too bad maybe just a bit of a tighter crop would do the trick imo. just to remove any doubt that the girl maybe stand on something..

#6 get his back straight and remove those legs from the shot..any shot with his legs predominantly within the frame will result in him looking tall...I mean..they are bloody long legs and all..

The first and second shots really nail it imo, without knowing that hes 6 9 you would never know from those images..

The exposure and lighting is pretty well spot on too..

I think you need to test/try full length shots. The brides dress is one of the important shots to get.

Thanks - I covered that during the test shoot - and this won't be my first wedding This thread was just about working with the height difference

Nicely done David! Great to see ideas coming nicely together into a finished product.

Did you use a softbox/beauty dish as your key light? If so, how are you triggering it and who is holding it for you?

Nice choice of location and finding natural soft light.

I figured you might have some ideas here

yeah sorry David, I missed posting on this thread before you actually did the photos..I reckon you'll be sorted for the day though..smart move doing some test shots etc...
