Best settings to avoid back focus with 70-200mm VR lens

Postby Willy wombat on Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:04 am

Hi guys

I have found that I have been having a bit of issue recently with back focus with my 70-200 lens on the Nikon D200. This is reasonably common when the subject is a little bit of distance from the camera and moving towards me (extra especially whent he subject is fast (like a running dog). I might have three images in 5 with soft focus in such circumstance. Stationary subjects are generally sharp 8 out of ten times.

Here are my settings:
I shoot in apperture priority with the continuous low mode, and use spot focus to get my lock.
Sometimes I use continual focus but i tend to get better (sharper) results when I use single focus and then I feather the shutter.
I always try to use the middle focal point, and sometimes use the first left/right spots but never the far side focal points bcause often get unsharp images.
I usually turn the VR on and turn it to the "active setting"

Im hoping that someone might be able to give some advice on the best ways to avoid back focus so I can try and increase my hit rate with this style of photography. Especially with the big cycling race coming up in Melbourne shortly.

Thanks guys
Steve

Hi guys

Just wondering if anyone had a chance to think about this question.

Do I need to refine it a bit?

Thanks
