Hi Nigel,

I had a play with the Nikon 200mm micro f4 and tamron 90mm.
I am heavily contemplating which lens to get.
DOF and distance to object are my first criteria, sharpness of course is a mandatory factor too.
Longer focal length (200mm) means somewhat limitations in DOF compared to shorter focal length, however more distance to critters and other things that may want to fly away.
This consideration is also important.
105mm or 90 mm mean slightly closer distance to object and a slightly larger DOF.
Also an f2.8 in regards to macro is not important, however for using as a prime to do non macro (perhaps portrait) shots f2.8 may be very welcome.
I'd be very interested in other peoples experiences and also Nigel, what you are going to choose.

nigels, I have had mine now for several days, probably do some shooting tomorrow, but initial impressions are that it is fantastic, and other people's work using this lens has been very impressive.

I lust after that lens... It is my next planned purchase..

(but just went up $50 )

The 105mm Micro was the first lens addition to my D70 kit. To spice up this Good Friday evening I thought I'd bring in some colour. Here's a shot my wife did with the lens. The flowers were about 20mm in diameter.

I strongly sing the praise of this prime lens. I've posted this before, but it's my favorite Nikkor 105mm portrait:




It would be very difficult to beat the quality of the Nikkor 105mm Micro.

I don’t know Alistair - the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro is no slouch.

What DOF do you achieve with this lens ?

When using 1:1, as this pic is, you have around 2mm

CD - with a 105 macro at f/32 and the subject 12 centimetres from the focal plane you will have a DOF of 0.02cm. Same specs but at f/16 you will have a DOF of 0.01cm

Fortunately its not quite as bad as suggested by Sirhc55's post
The close focus distance of the Nikor105 is 31.4cm, which gives a DOF of 7.6mm, assuming 0.02mm circle of confusion. btw, I love the lens

Gordan - I stand corrected - thank you. I must have been on something last night.

The Sigma also has a closest focussing distance of 31.3cm giving the same DOF as the Nikkor. Taking this distance from the film plane to the front of the lens at 1:1 you are approximately 105mm from the subject matter.

Thanks for all your advice and info guys, will be my next purchase.

Have to slow down for a while though, maybe birthday or Chrissy present. Recently purchased a few lenses of Birdy, bank balance looking a bit sick, still have to keep my promise to the wife that bathroom renovations and a couple of other home improvements will take precedence over all else..
