If thats an image of his plane thats crashed, it appears he was unfortunate to die given the relatively minor damage to the aircrafts itself.

thats the first thing i thought, however looking at the image of the plane futher indicates he probably suffered pretty high deccelaration in the up/down direction, there is no (little) wreckage screwn over a skid path indicating a controlled landing - in those little old aircraft there ain't much to keep you alive in a crash, certified back in the days before dynamic seats etc...

He has done some quality work indeed! Looks like a jolly character. In the last picture I think he is holding a 350D!
