So thanks to a work colleague (soon to be a member here) who found this and shared it with me.

This is some serious time lapse - might not be everyone's cup of tea but thought it was definitely worth sharing on here with some people that would appreciate the photography behind it.

Two things stand out from this, for me.

The first is that this was created with a 5D. It clearly shows how the video landscape (sorry about the pun) has moved in terms of being able to create a stunningly high quality video with some readily available, inexpensive equipment.

Just a few years ago, to do something like this, you'd have needed some very high end movie or video gear, where you're looking at around $20K purely for the camera alone. Optics would have added a few more thousand to this. The cost of a 5DII and some L glass represents just a fraction of the investment required - a D7000 even less - and yet this sort of hardware is now readily available to all.

Of course, one still needs the vision and the talent, but the playing field has suddenly become a whole lot more level.

The second relates to the methodology used for these. Most of the images appear to have been made from a slowly moving base. I'm thinking that a typical dolly wouldn't provide the longer term stability - some of these sequences would have been shot over a number of hours - and neither would a dolly allow for the micro movements that would be needed to achieve the outcomes displayed here.

I'm thinking that a small motor on a rail may have been the go - perhaps a variant on the motors that are used to drive astronomical photography, and keep the camera aligned with the earth's movement. Tony?

I also note that the movement is not always lateral - sometimes it's forwards, and other times it may be vertical.

Most of the motion control for this video was done with the Stage Zero Dolly by Dynamic Perception. Once I got comfortable using the DP dolly I fell in love. I can set up shots now in much shorter times. More importantly for me, it is much smaller and much more portable than my homemade motion control. Without it, shots like the Delicate Arch shot in Utah would be nearly impossible due to the length of the hike. In addition to the Stage Zero, I also used a three axis motion controlled CamTram. The CamTram is the most versatile dolly I have ever used. Its applications are only limited by your creativity. The CamTram has virtually no weight limit. I was able to achieve shots that dolly-in with the camera just over the ground because of the CamTram's ability to hold heavy counter weights.

To me, the music definitely had an Apple feel to it. Nevertheless, appropriate to the imagery.

First guy that I saw using this technique was the guy at TSO Photography. Some of you probably have seen some of his timelapse videos before, the link below is for The Mountain. Also check out his Aurora on Vimeo

As you say Gary, the price point to do this type of photography is certainly greatly reduced. Not to mention that this gear is actually fairly compact and one can take it to some amazing places

Not at all. You could have done exactly this with a D70 5 years ago. All you need is a method to control the camera telling to to take a photo every x seconds. Nikon Capture did this with the D70 and I used mine to produce time lapse sequences. Once you have the individual images, it is just software to put the frames together into a movie.

Also to do HD video, all you need is 1280x1080. D70 is 3008x2000 so more than enough.

Andrew, my understanding of this was that you need fairly good high ISO capability ie ISO1600 to prevent the stars from blurring. Is this true?

Ah... are we talking about the specific images or the ability to shoot time lapse and make it into a video? If it is the specific images, then yes, high ISO would be needed, but any camera that can handle high ISO would work. If it is the latter. my point still holds.

this stuff is awesome...and really the price for that dolly is stupidly cheap when you think about it, i reckon a quick and dirty mod to that kit to include a super long beam, say 20ft would make things very interesting (just gotta find that extrusion profile

) anyone want go halves in a kit :wink:

I guess we are talking about the beautiful night skies dipicted in these videos that were made with the help of a clean high ISO images. Perhaps you are talking about time lapses which didn't require high ISO capability ie made in good light during day time etc?

They sell the kit without the board, easier to ship internationally. Doing a quick search for "1030 aluminum extrusion" brings up plenty of results in Australia, so certainly doable and the hardware is fully programable, hummmm

I am sure you can get the extrusion, there even seems to be some on ebay, its commercial 6061 crap used for all kinds of allen key kits. There is even a mob in seven hills (sydney who sell it) you can get 4m lengths...now we are talking....

Not quite as cheap as immediately obvious.

The price stated on their website is actually only 50% of the price. They're quite open about it when you click through, stating that the stated price is a 50% deposit on the full price.

Beware:

it’s best to find a tripod/head that is rated for the 15-20 pound range

That's for a 6' rail. A 12'er may need more.
My big Gitzo is OK (18Kg). I would place my small Gitzo (12kg) as marginal. Not sure of your system

Gary is correct, since the dollies are on back-order, they only ask for a 50% deposit. So the actual cost of the full kit including the rail is $895USD and without the rail $745USD. The second kit without the rail means the shipping is cheaper. Not sure what the cost of the rail would be.

Still not a bad price overall.

6 Foot will fit inside most cars as long as you have access through the boot into the passenger compartment. I can get 3m(10ft) into Pam's Peugeot 307.

12 foot will go on the roof of most cars without too many dramas
Over that will cause real headaches.

This is relevant because the most economical way to buy is usually the longest & always a standard length. This is 145 Inch (12Ft) or 242 Inch (20Ft)

But the standard length of the drive belt is 6 Ft.

So it is either buy a 12 ft rail & pay extra for a special belt, or get a standard belt and pay extra to get a 6ft (special length) rail. Though the overall cost will probably be lower.

OTOH longer rails may give greater scope for creativity. E.g. Hang one end over the end of a builiding & shoot down.

Either way I would pay extra for anodised. If I know you, you are going to want to drop it in the ocean sooner or later.

Regardless, I need to work on turning my time lapse shoots from a bunch of photos into a video. I have a few sequences taken already, but like you it is a once in a blue moon thing. (Or less frequent depending on your definition of a blue moon. There are several. The most commonly accepted definition is the second full moon in a calendar month. This type is actually quite frequent.)

The first is pretty much the sold solution. THe Arduino controller is the one used. I suspect this may even be an early prototype as the Stage zero dolly is pretty much a backyard operation.

I can't quite see the second solution working for Gerry's Venus Rising shoot.
