Hi,
I was wondering if someone could recommend me a new lens that would work for my type of photography, seen below.
I'm not a photographer, I just bought my first dslr some months ago and read up on the basics of working it.
I'm using a Canon 550d with the two kit lenses 18-55 and the 50mm 1.8.
I also use it for video work but am considering a lens for better photos.
I'm looking for one under $1000

Thankyou. (:

Hi and welcome.
You will get more response if you follow the forum rules. In particular a limit of four images per post and place a MEANINGFUL location in your profile. The latter in particular could help you enormously. It is not unknown for members to lend others nearby gear for appraisal or just to help out. Turning up at meets also helps in this regard. There is usually a fair amount of gear comparison going on.

Your budget of $1000 and the desire for "better" photos point you to prime lenses (fixed focal length). I do not belong to the canon school, but a quick squizz at the net has me suggesting a 28mm f/1.8 Canon, or possibly a Samyang 85mm f/1.4 See this post for some info on the latter: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=41340. If you didn't already have the 50mm f/1.8, I would suggest the 50mm f/1.4

That said, it is the photographer that makes the image, not the gear. Learn to use what you have. And learn to compose in camera. You clearly are more interested in Post Processing, but getting it close to right before you get to the computer will save you heaps of time. In particular learn what White Balance can do for you. YOu can use it either for greater realism, or greater creativity.

I quite like your work. Please post some more. For critique perhaps.

There is in fact only 2 images, just one of those images comprises 4 different photographs :)

I also don't shoot with Canon, but for that price I would suggest posisbly the Sigma 24-70 F2.8, various sites list it from between $800 and $1,100

interesting images, and agree that the white balance appears to be a little out in some of the images

Cheers
Tom

Which still brings into question the forum rules, and in that instance, the one that stipulates the maximum size for any image should not exceed 800px. :)

But in all seriousness, Greg's observations are correct.

My question for the OP is in which way does he find his current lens selection restrictive? In which way is it hindering his ability to get the images that he wants? As Greg observes, there is a lot happening in post here, and so I'd like to know how it is felt that a different lens might assist here.
