Tamron releases image-stabilized 24-70mm F2.8 zoom

Postby Remorhaz on Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:28 am

Could be interesting...

Tamron has announced a 24-70mm F2.8 zoom for full frame cameras that features inbuilt optical stabilisation - a first in this class of lens. The SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, to give it its full name, also incorporates an Ultrasonic Silent Drive motor for autofocus, which allows full-time manual focus. The lens is moisture-resistant, and features a circular aperture diaphragm for the attractive rendition of background blur. It will be produced in Canon, Nikon and Sony mounts, with price and availability to be confirmed at a later date.

It has a SP tag....if the current trend is to follow then this lens will be pretty good. I just picked up a SP 28-75mm f/2.8 as a light weight alternative to my Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 and have been pretty pleased with what it can do. As for this lens, I am sure many new D700/D800, 5D/5D II/5D III users will be looking at it with interest.

Nice to see it has IS. Perhaps IS/VR in shorter lenses ins't just a gimmick afterall.

Up until last weekend, I'd have said it's a gimmick.

On Sunday I had a play with the FT1 on the V1, using the 85mm. My first observation was that I needed VR.

And a tripod. My Manfrotto was with Leigh.

I'll try and post some images later today; but I am impressed.

But an 85mm f/1.4 isnt a "short" lens as it is....add the 2.7x crop factor you are looking at a genuine telephoto

As previously demonstrated, IS/VR is a benefit when shooting handheld video, even on shorter lenses. It works great with my 18-55mm lens.

Exactly my point.

Partially.

The rest of my point being that it wasn't what I was expecting. Not on the 85mm.

My error entirely; a trap I wasn't looking for, essentially.

:biglaugh: that is one way of looking at it....I want to play with the FT1 + 70-200mm VR (maybe + TC14EII)

Patrick,

That will be a very nice combo, but despite the VR, I reckon you should expect to throw some legs underneath the package.

Patrick???

Yes I think I will need to use a good tripod on that combo......how long do you have the FT1 for Gary?

Officially, a couple of weeks, Usually these dates get extended; I have the V1, for instance, on a two week agreement starting last October.

Mind you, the FT1 was added to that agreement and the agreement modified so that it ends next week. :)

First thing: you'll need to check the camera's firmware version, and possibly install the firmware update.

I have updated the firmware on my J1 to the latest version...so it should be FT1 ready.....I am thinking about picking up a FT1 whilst I am in HK next month...if they are available. However I am not sure if the FT1 will see much usage...but FT1 + 105VR would also be interesting
