Camera for student?

Postby BBJ on Sun Feb 19, 2012 10:43 pm

Hi All,
A friend of mine's son is doing Photography at school this year and asked me what would be a good camera for him to use.

As i use D3, etc..i have no idea on the smaller camera range but they are after something in the range of $400 to $600 mark so i throw open to you all as to any ideas for this price range???

Thanks
John

The Nikon D3100 with kit lens is also a good choice, similar price to the Canon.

Could also look at the mirrorless cameras like Sony NEX-5.

Getting a second-hand dslr is also a good option. Did this for a friend's daughter, worked great. You would get more bang for the buck.

I just bought the girlfriend a D3100 with 18-55 kit lens. You can get them online for under $600. Good camera to learn the basics on, with a view to progressing to higher end bodies.

Why not get a used D70? Coupled with a kit lens you'd still have spare change based on that budget.

Used D300 with 18 - 70mm kit lens. Gives the student something to build on.
