Same here... I went and posted some pics for discussion...
Zip, Nada, Zero replies... while posts about the 350D etc.. raged on! sigh... It was once a really nice community (well the NTF area at least..) New page

John - saw this pic yesterday and thought what a great idea implemented by the clever captioning - did not read further then.
Both you and Scott are right - if this forum ever heads that way then I will head off, but it won’t Chris
-------------------------------- I started my life with nothing and I’ve still got most of it left
The picture was rather poignant I thought, but as you rightfully identified Leek, the discussion about the picture really got off the topic
Agree with you about thus forum but do keep in mind- The footy season has hardly started yet!!! Cheers Graham (Go Brisbane Lions!)
If this forum begins to head that way, you will see the admins actively taking a part in stopping it.
Two admins can be quite intimidating, especially when they think very similarly. Worse is that we have the access to the "ban" button. Producer & Editor @ GadgetGuy.com.au

Geez, Leek, that thread was quite disturbing.
Reminds me of the wide open door we have here in cyberland - and all the freaks can just wander in.... Teach your children well. Simon

That was the sort of stuff that made me not go to that forum much anymore... There's good friendly people too, but has no family feeling like here, that's why I hang around...
Cheers, Mudder Aka Andrew
You hit the nail squarely on the head, Mudder. I was part of that forum when it was split off from the d100 forum. I kept waiting for it to mature and have a large core of people comprising a "community", but it's been over a year now and I don't see any evidence that it will ever happen. It never will happen without having moderators to throw out the trash. It's really a shame too, because there are, or were, lots of excellent photogs there, that could make that place informative and fun. my gallery of so-so photos

You'd think it would mature too, especially after their ten million post point.

I was reading that same thread yesterday. I was thinking the same thing. I only got through half the posts, and couldn't read anymore. I prefer this forum as well, even though, there isn't as many members. But it's the quality of members that count, not quantity.
I've got a feeling that this will happen to any forum once the membership rises to a critical mass. DPreview was once a very good place to visit but it now averages 10 million visitors a month. That is huge! The moderaters could ban 10 people a day and not knock a dent in the loonies and trolls.

Matt. K
I started at DPreview then I found this, much better forum. First of all (as was already said) this forum is much more like a family which gives you a great unhostile feeling. Secodly, for me personally, it is a nice advantage that this forum is Australia based, so there is a lot of valuable local knowledge and advice on where to buy stuff is, to me, indispensible. The other major disadvantage of the DPreview forum, I think, is that there is too much posts traffic. Many posts go unnoticed, simply because they are swept away by the next ones.
Alex
IMO this forum works so well because it's simply a decent place to hang out and exchange ideas with like-minded photo enthusiasts of varying abilities. Have you ever noticed how many people immediately offer up a warm welcome when a newcomer makes their first message or image post? A lot of them! And criticism is always offered in a helpful constructive way, never hurtful. No one ever has to be afraid of this forum or of expressing their art or opinions. It reminds me of the reputation that ham radio operators use to have of always being gentleman above all else. Is this a great place or what!
Good place you've put together here Gary, Leigh, Chris, BirdDog, Etc, Etc, Etc... (too, too may to name). Thank you for all you do! Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
i miss the good old days of dpreview where ppl actually had great ideas to discuss and display, eg sony fourm.

I have a theory about why this is such a friendly forum with a family atmosphere. We don't have the anonymity that a place like the other forum does. I am happy to say that I have met a few of the members here and hope to meet quite a few more. I also think the Aussie influence brings a more welcoming and inclusive feel to the place.
Long may it last. Cheers Dean I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

Well said, Dean. There's a lot to be siad for everyone here being up-front and candid with other members. I love the fact that we can get together and meet and I agree that goes a long way towards strengthening the bonds here. Someone only has to ask a question and virtually the next post will be something along the lines of "Come along to the next mini-meet and we'll show you." Pretty bloody Aussie if you ask me! Simon

I am a member of 4 forums, and there are 2 that I am on constantly (1 being here, of course!).
I love it here, and it does feel like a family. Even though I am Female (this is a male dominated forum!), and I am an extreme newbie to the whole Digital world, everyone has been so great and helpful to me. My pics are no where near the quality of everyone else's, but I'm not afraid to show my pics, because I will end up getting positive critisism from experienced people who I respect and admire! I opened up a can of worms with the music thread, but it's great to learn other things about each other, and a little healthy debate never hurt anyone! I enjoy the banter that goes on here, it makes me laugh, and that can only be good! The other forum I am constantly on I feel the same way, too. A great bunch of people with a family atmosphere. I can't see that this forum will degenerate to anything less....we will all make sure of that! Keep posting, keep answering questions, and keep making me laugh! Special thankyou to GregB for helping me with Photoshop questions!
Hi stormygirl,
I agree with a lot you are saying. Show us some more of your work. I get quite some inspiration and ideas from other photographer's pictures. Male dominated this forum is ? Well the majority of members are male, no doubt. Cheers CD
***THIS IS MY 100TH POST***
(sorry...couldn't resist!) You will see much more of my pics, and I get some wonderful inspiration from everyone here! I'm still getting to know my D70, and now I have the added complication of getting to know PSCS. One day I will find time to do everything.....at the moment it's spent between 2 wonderful forums
Stormy, we cater for the more Feminine side here at this Forum He goes by the name of Marcus, I'm sure you can PM Him / Her at your leisure.
Glad you like all of us Mad Hatters, well some of us anyway. Mic.
Stormy.....Can you please go & give Michelle (Mic) a bick kick in the b_lls for me? I would forever be in your debt. It's a long way for me to travel to do it and I'm sure you would enjoy doing it for me!
I know nutzinc
Arrrhhh Damn Marcus, do you have to see everything I post, I'm having fun here.
Go to bed and give your wife a surprise, take the heels off first Nighty Nite. Mic.
dpreview is full of trolls, so is another prominent forum i go on .. well at least some of the people.
this forum has a somewhat more nerdy, polite, non "high school" mentality about it, and the the majority are this way ... meaning any A holes whom roll up will pretty quickly get chased out of town. I think dpreview is just waaaay too big for its boots.. thats the key
