Lightroom and non-cpu lens info

I am running Lightroom 3.5 and have only just noticed that Lightroom does not seem to recognise non-cpu lens data programmed back into the Nikon DSLR's.

I have my SP 17mm f/3.5 programmed into my D700 and D300 as a 18mm f/3.5 lens and it either registers as a 0.0mm f/0.0 lens if the file has been imported straight from the camera or as an "unknown lens" if I have edited the image in CNX2.

Anyone notice this behaviour? It is not a huge deal for me as I am not a huge LR user, but it is nice to know what lens I have used. I only noticed this because I was trying to look at the breakdown of which lenses I use the most (one the few reasons that I use LR).

I can't speak for lens that have been programmed back to the body - however all my non-cpu lens on the D7000 are inputted with aperture etc and this data shows up fine in LR3..

I assume it shows up fine in CNX2? what about when you save as jpeg and view the exif data externally?

i have to check CNX2 but i have never really bothered to check the metadata in CNX2.

What i meant was LR doesnt seem to register the lens type, it will still tell me the focal length and aperture but it place the images into unknown lens or 0.00mm f/0.0 when you try to view images by lens type using the metadata tab up the top.

i'll check CNX2 when I get home tonight to see what the camera places into the lens type slot in the exif.

I think I m seeing the same thing in LR4.1

However, you can achieve the search you want by putting the Lens= 0.0mm f/0.0 in the first column. This will load only non CPU lenses, then the focal length you want in the second column:

(I tried to test in CNX2 but my copy won't read D7000 files. And so far it has hung on update)
EDIT:
Tried ViewNX2:

As you can see, the lens info section is blank.
So I think it is a matter of getting Nikon to change how they store the Unknown Lens info at capture time. Good luck

I get the same thing as you do Greg....non-cpu data doesnt seem to be used to fill the LENS TYPE field. I am confused about the disparity between SOOC and edited though. My J1 files do the something similar....SOOC and edited (in CNX2) files show different lens type designation...although the latest firmware revision seems to have stopped that.

you are right cameron, i see the same as greg, there is no lens model data, just the focal length and aperture.

note, just checked in CNX too, the same deal.

I've stopped using CNX2 so I can't really suggest anything.
I find LR with the NIK addins give me everything CNX2 did and in addition has a really robust image management system. I find the latter is the most important factor.
For that matter I rarely use the NIK plugins. Except for SFX.

I do know CNX2 stores the edit information inside the NEF, so it would not surprise me that it is overwriting the Lens Data field with something equally unhelpful. Could be useful in determining which images have been edited though.

Yes, it's the same for me, Greg. Your 0.0mm f/0.0 lens must be quite remarkable since it has a zoom range of at least 16mm to 500mm .
