D800 vs D810

So I have a D800, and considering upgrading my second body currently a D700. At present nothing the D810 has over the D800 seem worth the extra for but I was wondering if anyone has played with both of them ?

Have they moved buttons etc, or is it really under the hood pretty much the same camera ? (More dots on the LCD, and next iteration processor).

Is there anything I've overlooked that would discount the D800 when compared to its newer sibling ?

I had the D800E and then also purchased the D810.

Areas I have noticed already;
- The quiet mode on the D810 is brilliant compared to the D800E. I have it almost exclusively sitting on Quiet continuous mode
- Also the speed of the AF has been improved, especially in low-light.
- AF overall is improved

Reviews also suggest that the D810 has a better dampened shutter/mirror unit that has helped to alleviate the requirement for higher shutter speeds.

If you are not feeling a D810, have you considered the D750 as a 2nd camera?

Yes I did look at D750 but after shooting dual bodies with different button layouts I'm hoping to go to keep the same control setup so I can quick change between the two.. without having to think... okay I'm on this now I'm on that.

Tommy do you still have the 800E ? The quiet mode is actually something I read early on and glossed over but for wildlife that would be handy. And improved AF is also worth considering there is a better spread of AF points now too isn't there ?

I actually decided to sell the D800E and kept my D700 as my second body.

I agree on the dampening of the shutter - I've done 2 weddings since I purchased the D810 and the first thing I noticed was how little it annoyed everyone :)

Then I use the D700 and I realise just how different the sound is.

Any particular reason why the D700 suited your shooting style better ?

I decided to keep the D700 over the D800E for a few reasons, mainly as it is a very different camera than the D800 range.
- Smaller image sizes, so good for travel
- Brilliant low-light performance

The D810 is great in low light as well, but the larger pixel sizes just gives such a nice image.

Whereas the D800 and D810 are both very similar to each other, I would simply never use the D800 any more - unless the D810 was broken

I sold the D800E for $2,100 - with 57k image count, so not too bad. I also happened to walk past Teds when they were doing 15% off all Nikon gear, and had a much better camera store here in Adelaide agree to beat their price - so better than i would have been able to get it grey market at the time.

Update - I um'ed and arh'd then decided not to buy a new camera for the trip. Then a friend decided to upgrade her kit, so I'm getting a 2nd hand D800 for a decent price so I can shoot dual bodies and they'll be identical. So pretty happy with that arrangement.
