I am being consumed by the lust for a 80-400VR and was wondering what I could hope to offload my barely used couple of month old 70-300ED for?

The completed sales for the month of April on ebay seems to suggest anywhere from $220-280 US dollars.

The VR bug has definitely bit me.

I like the idea of a 400mm x 1.7 teleconverter so I can voyeurise suburbia from my balcony

The Nikon 80-400VR can't be used with the Nikon TC-17.

The 200-400 is more cheaper than the 80-400
$8K in comparison by less than 2K

I thought so.

Might be time to sell some shares or the house or maybe just forget about it for a while.

dhess,

It is possible to reach 1000mm focal length by using the Sigma 2X Apo Tele Converter.

By attaching the 2X APO EX Tele-Converter, this lens can be used as a 200-1000mm/F10.4-12.6 manual focus zoom lens, while maintaining a very compact size for 1000mm focal length. It is also possible to use AE (Automatic Exposure) function, when EX Tele-converters are attached.

All the lenses 80-400/ Nikon or Sigma will work with TC, but what for? thought the viewfinder is too dark and you need few floodlights to light up your subjects, with TC, it increase the f. stops

Sigma has a 300-800 mm lens, this is on the EFL zoom range :D :D

Stick on a 2x converter, factor in the multiplier effect, 2400 mm. And you wouldn't need any ND filters :D

Unlike the 70-300G, I thought the 70-300ED could itself use a teleconverter - that would let you see a lot more of suburbia at a much lower cost!

Any reason why you haven't mentioned this option?

I'm also looking at the cheapest way to get some more length - unfortunately, I don't think (from the Sigma site) that my Sigma 70-300 APO can use a teleconverter - happy for anyone else on the forum to let me know I'm wrong!

I was therefore thinking about a 70-300ED with a teleconverter. Have also briefly considered the Bigma, but I think it might be a bit too heavy for me to handle well.
