How does he do this?

I want to do more automotive photography. When I look around I see lots of motion pictures. I do not understand how they get shots like this. Now, I am not talking about panning and shoot a car going straight. I am talking about the ones where the cars are turning and wheels are spinning.

Wow, those are pretty awesome. I hear you man. It must be some sort of rig that travels along with the car or something.

they are done using a rig that attaches to the car using mainly custion cups. there are alot of options as most rigs come in parts that you build to suit your needs. they are usually done with the car in neatral and being pushed to reduce vibration

Monopod/Tripod + slower shutter speed and pan to follow the car :) + a rig like what nodabs said

Well he's either really good and stupid at the same time.....ie. getting really close and low level and managing to get them in the frame while they hoon around the corner.

Or

It's a photoshop job and the car is actually stationary :)

Or

He's in another car that has some sort of camera on a boom at low level and remotely activating the shutter?

2 shots taken, first shot is of car and background, car is stationary.
2nd shot has car removed and the camera tripod on a dolly that is moved to create blur in the background. The 2 shots are layered with blur applied to the wheels of upper shot of car. I think anyway, maybe someone else has better idea. First post so not an expert. :?:

Very simple to do in Photoshop. Selet the wheel. Feather the selection by about 10 pixels. Blur/radial blur. Choose your amount of spin. I suspect the shots you posted the URL to were Photoshoped.

Some great stuff here but I think I'll have to agree with Matt about the photoshopping - especially when you compare his 'sales brochure' style shots with his track pans. They have a completely different look to them.

Is anyone brave enough to ask the guy? Not to raid his entire stash of secrets but just to get the general idea - he may be flattered by the request.

Yeah was going to say the shot of the water and the smokey tires at the track look totally different to the brochured look.

Also the cars that are turning but suppose to be in motion. If they were doing any sort of speed they'd be kicking up dust and possibly smoking the tires. Possibly even releasing brake pad dust. None of which can be seen.

the rigs look like this for the shots with the whole car they can be done with bigger versions of this and shopped out

Not sure if I would want to be strapping a camera worth well over $2k to the outside of a car.

Matt I think your original suggestion was on the money. Grabbed a shot off the net and tried out your explanation...........works well! Apart from the brakes being visible in this case, you would never know otherwise. Thanks for the tip!

What!!!!!
Are you telling me that was done in Photoshop?

Geez....... I thought I spent enough time on the computer.
I fix them for a living. I put all my photos on them. I LOVE checking out this group for tips and adding my 2 cents now and then. And now you go and do this to me?
I'm going to be a computer junkie when you show me things like this - I gotta play more - step 1 - install photoshop. I've been putting it off coz I was afraid I might get addicted or something. Now this???

And as for the camera strapped to the car, the comment on insurance, and esp. the comment on a camera that plugs into a car made me LOL
Cheers, Adam.

no doubt there is alot of PS but the bulk of these car shots are those type of rigs and or dollies the cars arn't being driven hard (or at all) in most cases which is why they look so smooth they are usually just being pushed or rolling in N those rigs however can stand up to alot that one on the rs4 was used to make a vid while being driven at 100+MPH so like 170 odd km (my conversions suck) without issues all you need is a pocket wizard remote and a rig and you can play around with it

yea but it's a really nice canon not like a dribble

i think if i had a more..lets say exotic car i would invest in a simple rig you can get really cool effects and you don't need to go out on a highway or anything you ca just push you car around a car park
