Hello all

I am getting a flash bracket for my SB800 to avoid shadows while shooting portrait.

I'm not sure I understand the deal with the connector cords or if I need one at all as I thought the SB800 could be used wirelessly anyway.

Choice seems to be the SC-28 or SC-29.

Can anyone advise the advantages and disadvantages of either? I have researched on the net but finding it difficult to get a clear picture.

I will probably get the Stroboflip VH2000. The RRS bracket you suggested would do the job I am sure but it is $250US more expensive.

The stroboflip works fine - I have used mine for a wedding and other shoots and although it does not look as smick as the RRS etc., it does the job

Anyone with any comments on the relative merits of the SC-28 compared to the SC-29. Which should I get?

SC-28 or 29 is not a big difference. The only difference is one has the IR and other not. Just make sure the flash bracket you're going to get is not obstruct the IR on the SC-29 mounted on the hot shoe.

Just a bit of clarification which may assist others with the SC-29 and trying to decide on a suitable flash bracket

The SC-29 has a switch which allows you to turn off the IR on the hot shoe connector and use the IR located on the the flash unit.

This overcomes the problem presented by the RRS flash bracket which effectively blocks the IR unit on the hot shoe.

can u explain further? can u explain the situations, ie indoor or outdoor? with indoor u would bounce the light of ceiling. with outdoor u would use diffuser. would u be able to provide pic to illustrate?

Hard to understand your questions Genji - the main function of a camera bracket with which you can use your SB800 off camera is to be able to switch the flash from horizontal to vertical format. This enables the flash to be ABOVE the lens in all situations. This helps minimise shadows when shooting in vertical format.

You can still bounce the flash when it is on a bracket because the SB800 head is where the bounce functionality is located - not the bracket.

You can swing the flash and bounced it with RRS flash bracket in difference angle same as mounted two flashes on it.

You can do this with the manfrotto dual flash arm as well Birdie but I wanted to keep the answer simple

the reason i ask is because recently i photographed a function (indoors). the Sb800 user guides recommends bouncing the light of the ceiling aswell as using the bounce card. I believe this is the method used by many ppl.

however, after seeing the photos i was not satisfied with the result. some ppl had shadows under eyes, which i thought the bounce card was suppose to avoid, ie bounce card is suppose hi-light the eyes.

although some photos at close distance, 1 to 1.5m was acceptable. but others at longer distance didnt work.

in portrait mode, i rotated the SB800 flash head to point towards the ceiling.

the question is with the flash bracket, either RRS or Stroboflip, would u still bounce flash towards ceiling or not??

spooky, sorry for hi-jacking your topic, but wanted to know if we had the same problem.

As I understand it, the bracket allows the flash to remain above the lens and avoid shadows on the side of your subject caused by the SB800 being way out to one side because you have rotated the camera 90 degrees.

To bounce or not to bounce is a seperate issue. People bounce so the light is softer and less harsh on facial features. The use of a bracket allows you to bounce if you wish even when you rotate the camera for a portrait shot because the flash can be moved into a vertical position above the lens.

The SC-28 is only about $10 cheaper. So SC-29 is the one I guess.

Any thoughts from the very knowlegeble members here?

Basicaly I want to be able to use the flash off camera.

Portraits in portrait orientation (not landscape)
Side lighting flash etc.

I realise I can use on camera flash to trigger it but
1. I don't know how to do it (I know, too lazy to read the manual)
2. Don't want on camera flash to contribute to lighting.

Are you going to use it with flash bracket?
The SC 28/ 29 with its limitation in lenght if you're going to use it off camera with distance.

I understand these cables are good for about 1.5 metres which is more than I can imagine using.

The bracket I have is a generic one and does not block the IR on hot shoe.
