22,000 shots and my shutter has gone

My shutter blew its top after 22,000 shots. Damn, that's not even a walk around the block for me! Very disapointed! Sent the rig off to Maxwells for a quote and will keep you all informed. Meanwhile, it's the sketchpad and 2B pencil for me. "Stand still you bastard! There's an artist at work here!"

Matt, very sorry to hear that. Yours is one camera which shouldn't be stopped. Hopefully Birddy will keep it on the fast track for you. Seems a bit early for this to happen, I thought 100,00 was the shutter life.

http://www.opanda.com a try, the product is called iexif, free, reads exif data and also gives shutter actuations. Could also try sawing it in half and counting the rings

The repair cost will be interesting. If the camera body cost $1,500, at 22,000 shots, we are talking 6.8c per shutter press if the body had to be replaced.

As all said long ago on this forum, the D70 can last more than what Matt.K got on his camera.
The shutter release or something wrong there ain't cheap to repair unless it's under warranty
The new D70 body only cost $1200.00 (Grey).

22k shots isn't really that many at all and the shutter shouldn't be failing then. Mine has 34k on it and I have seen many posts by users claiming more than that. One user claimed to have exceeded 100,000 before it failed.

Not every camera is the same, one could be last at 1 mil. and other could lat in few hundreds. It's just your luck!

How did you get extended warranty? I would love to go with that but Maxwell can't.
Did you get it from the store you got the camera from? I got mine from Birdy.
Matt this scares me, I take a lot of photos. The filenames have already looped over once, so I am over 10,000 photos. And I only got my camera at the end of December.
I sympathise and am glad your warranty looked after you!

I've only had my cam since mid-january and I'm at 6k shots.
Without even really thinking about it, I would expect 100k shots.
If I only get 20-25k shots, I won't be anywhere NEAR ready to buy a new cam.
I typically keep my cams for 3 years. At my current rate of shooting, I'd be at 54k pics in 3 years. I REALLY HOPE it lasts that long.

This is not happenned in every camera, have you heard or know how many percent of shutter release failed at 22K on the D70 production?

There seems to be a very, very small numbers of D70's that have the same problem as mine, so it may be a known issue. The problem occurrs when using the SB800 in Continueous
mode. The shutter starts firing at high speed, flapping up and down like crazy, then comes to rest with the mirror at odd angles. Resetting does not cure the problem.

I knew you're cruel with your D70 and treated it badly! you shoot it as the 50mm machine gun mounted on the APC
So now you're now without it for two weeks and your eyes missed the viewfinder

Sorry about the basic question but how do you see your total shutter count. Is there a menu item that tells you this? I can't find anything.

I googled this and found that in the EXIF data there is a hidden area with the total shutter count, this can be viewed through software that I found but Windows only. Anyone know of one that works with Mac?

and is called Opanda Iexif. It is a very useful little program. The shutter count button is on the top left toolbar.

Looks good, even copies the Mac (Aqua/Panther Style) just not a Mac app.
Anyone know of a Mac utility that does same?

Better don't know and don't look at your shutter counter
the more you look into it the more make you worry, just forget it until it reaches its final second.
