Bluey the welder arrived at my neighbour's place this morning with a loaded MIG welder ready to cut the rust out of my neighbour's beloved 63 Holden UTE. I was going to take a few shots of the grinding and welding as I have a thing for sparks.

I thought that maybe a welding flash could have an adverse affect on a ccd.

Any advice most welcome on this beautiful day in Wollongong.

Hmmm.... Can you look at it? because if you cant they you cant frame through the VF...

If you can see it throught the VF the CCD will have no probs at all!

You can use CPL or ND filters for these shots

I don't know if its healthy or not for the CCD, but here's a shot of a friend welding:



Taken with a CoolPix 4300 (before I had a D70). No damage to it.

Suggested technique so you don't suffer from welding flash:
1. Frame up the shot what you think is going to be close enough while the welder is getting ready
2. set focus lock
3. while keeping the camera pointed at the subject, look away (being careful not to have the welding flash in your peripheral vision)
4. press shutter when you can hear the welding start
5. review shot, try again!

Excellent advice. I'm on my way to the 63 Holden right now. If I get a good photo I will post it. I am going to wear my welding mask which isn't as fashionable as the blue one in your photo Daniel but I will wear it anyway.

i dunno, i would warn against doing this as it would have similar effects as to shooting directy in the sun. i had framed the sun in the corner of one of my negs and it had put a burn mark in the corner and reaching outside my image frame . might has damaged my shutter doing this
