Power switch makes noise when turning

Postby NetMagi on Thu Apr 21, 2005 10:17 am

Got back from shooting mostly outside stuff today and my power button feels like there is something 'abrasive' in it. It makes a faint scratching noise when turning as if there something in there.

It's more noticeable when turning off than on. It's not something I would consider 'serious', but I'm fairly anal about my stuff and I'm always EXTREMELY cautious to not use the camera in dirty or sandy situations, and always store it in my bag zippered shut.

After cleaning the switch area with compressed air (which made no difference), I even tried applying a TINY bit of light oil intended for small bearings at the switch where it rotates on the body. It made no difference.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is this a phase in the 'wearing of the switch'. Should I be worried?

Rich,

I would not go adding oil to the switch, that could possibly cause you more problems - including warranty problems. It may simply be a small piece of junk (and it would need to be small to get in there) between the stationary body and moving part of the switch. Compressed air could possibly push it in further. Do not try to manipulate the switch in any way, otherwise you may find yourself picking up a whole heap of little pieces - there is not a whole lot holding switches like these together.

I assume that the switch still has that nice "snap to" action that it has always had. In that case, the best course of action, particularly if the camera is still under warranty, is not to worry and do absolutely nothing. It is also possible that you are now hearing something that has always been there - suprising the number of people who took several months to notice the faint rattle in their camera.

Cheers :)

yeah. . . . I know oil and electronics don't mix. I used an exceptionally small amt. and it's nearly as thin as water.

Hopefully it will just go away. . . :(

My friend stopped over today with his D70 and I compared my switch to his.

His makes no wierd noise and is as smooth as silk. Wish I knew what the hell happened to mine. . . .

I guess I just need to be satisfied it still snaps into both positions and doesn't seem to hamper use of the camera.
