But no mention of a MLU in the d70s preview..

Actually looking at that preview there is so very little between them...

Glen,

Maybe no sale due to people hate Nikon about the encrypted NEF files.    and perhaps they "jump ship".

So we will have plenty of stock and we will make good money and we're going to have a big party.

Thanking Adobe for bringing up the war. hehehehehehe. Pls. create more and more

I have the confirmation of delivery "few" D70s & D50 by mid May for my Corporate customers who got the back-orders in March and April. All sold at this stage.

Even though I have no intention of purchasing one I watch with much interest what the d50 will do to the market... Quite a lineup Nikon ore developing..

I think all they need to make it complete is something between the d70 and d2x (20D like) so something like a d90 with 8MP, 5fps and MLU

I'm not really seeing anything in that firmware upgrade that makes me want to change...

Will it let me add the vertical grip, hmm?

I'm still of the opinion that the D70s is a placeholder for the D90, which will come out at the same time as the D200.

My guess is mid-to-late this year.

also short D50 review

Only a slightly lobotomised D70.

I'm a tad concerned about the new firmware; does it include wb encryption?

Thats good birdie, i was just having a bit of a look at the specs of the D70s and well other than the bigger screen all eles look much the same so i guess i wouldn't bother unless you was after a new camera then you would get the later but other than maybe menu setups same deal, no major changes.

A D50 might be an economical choice for a second body. What do you guys think?

Leigh, the only reason I would change is for better AF, the rest seems like fluff. Gary, good question about WB. Who knows. I am with you Birdy, will start buying S/h D2X from people jumping ship

A D50 is for grandma and grandpa or the inlaws, who just want want to shoot in P mode.

I'm of the opinion that a second body needs to be rather similar in erganomics to your first.

The most important bit being 2 command dials. It would be a PITA switching to a second body and having to control things in a rather different way, where as with the D70 through to D2x, while button placement etc is a bit different, your major adjustments are pretty common.

Depends upon the price.

I'm seeing that a D50 might be quite a viable choice as a second body, given that the level of lobotomisation is nearly as low as mine. If the body only price is PP300 or more below that of the D70s, I think it could represent quite good value. The only major issue would be the different storage format being used, and you'd need to have (IMHO) at least that much of a price differential to permit the purchase of the new media.

I'm disappointed to not see either of the new lenses reviewed as yet.

As to the eventual (proper) replacement for the D70/D70s ... don't even think about 8MP; that simply will not cut it in the market place. They will need at least 12 to make it viable.

unfortunately, I don't think we will be seeing any life-changing firmware updates for the D70. Perhaps one or two minor ones, like this new one that will give us a prettier looking menu.

Considering that it is highly likely a D90 or D200 will be emerging in the near future, I can't see Nikon giving us options. If we want things like MLU, more fps etc... we'll be forced into upgrading to the new Dxxx camera to get it. If they give the D70 the ability to do all these, why would any of us change ?

Evolution of technology. Hold back on a few new key features and people will upgrade. Just look at PC's, cars, ISP's, mobile phones..................

Luckily, I am far from outgrowing my D70, so it will be with me for quite a while yet. Now the quest for lenses begins....

While I take your point, I don't see this as being a major issue.

When I was shooting weddings, I used two 35mm bodies in tandem - an FM/FE combo, and then followed by an FA/FE, and finally an F801/FE2. while the FE and FM were very similar, each of those bodies in latter two combos were significantly different, but that presented me with no difficulties whatsoever in high pressure front-line use.

It's simply a matter of becoming comfy with the features of each of the tools, and away you go.

Scott, the obvious question here is "does anyone unencrypt their white balance info?"

Chris, I am with you, after using Birddy's D2H or D2X you realise how good Nikon can make an AF system

It's nice to see they introduced the improvements they could through firmware, it shows continued commitment to their existing customers... I'm impatient to see how it'll affect the AF performance.

It makes you wonder what else they can do through a firmware upgrade but don’t because it would make the model too good

John,

Thanx for that, but I'd already seen the press releases, and with all due respect, my cat could have written those. And no, my cat is not especially smart, and that's probably my point. :)

I want to see what the lenses feel like, and how they perform. Are they trash, or treasure?

Again, that's the press release you're basing your statements on, and while I respect that, I don't have too much respect for the PR boofheads that write that shit.

Let's see what's actually in the "upgrades" first.

Who's going to be the guinea pig and see if they're including such user friendly features as encrypted wb?

So far we know that "only" the D2X has been proposed for the WB issue - I think if Nikon were to screw over D70 users via a new firmware upgrade, they will surely include that in the D70s now. So lets see what happens there.

Maybe it will happen becuase I think and don't quote me that Birddog said that NC5 full version will be included in every D70s kit. From Nikon's point of view they have given you all of the tools to "work" with a raw tool.

Only problem with that is that NC4 is a memory hog and is almost unworkable with my P4. I have no such problems using photoshop or Rawshooter, why should I buy a new computer just to please Nikon?

No choice Phillip, the NC 4.2 is required lot of memory, you have to make your own decision to use whatever you see at your convenience.
Can you upgrade memory in your system?

You know, CS really isn't that much of an improvement, and I'm still hesitant to switch knowing full well that depending on what I'm taking a picture of or scanning that Adobe might be censoring or not allowing me to work with (I refer to the money-scan issue that pops up in CS).

Besides Jethro, why upgrade to CS when you can just wait 'till CS2? PS7 is more than enough and I can tell you that a lot of news houses around the world still use the older versions of PS, like version 7, because they run that much better than the newer versions.

I run both PS7 and CS and they are both good. There is no disadvantage in running CS and I find that a few of the additions such as Shadow and Highlight, colour lens effects, lens blur etc can be an asset. :D

Only good thing I've found with CS so far is the ability to have layer sets within layer sets.

Not this again.

The last thing I want is another bloody Marcus & Jethro versus another mob of us.

Besides, we're off topic. At one point, I was convinced that this thread was about the new firmware.

leigh as i have stated before my opinion is my opinion and one that each and every one of us has. my comments are here to be laughed at or taken seriously. im sorry for having an opinion and no i dont conspire with marcus against the mob with whom the said mob are a damm fine bunch of people. seems bizzare that a lot of news houses are still using PS7 when most of them are using the creative suite which requres PSCS to intergrate with INDESIGN. just an observation!
shoot it real.

look! and see. Shoot and feel
