CF cards

Hello,

I just bought a D70 kit with DX lens a couple of days ago. Im VERY new to the SLR world. This is my second camera, first was a Sony DSCP10 compact.

I bought the D70 because I was fed up with the shutter lag on my Sony. That had pretty much turned me off the easy-to-use compact style cameras, hence getting a semi-pro SLR.

Anyway, I dont have a CF card yet and I was wondering what you guys use and what your opinions are.

From just browsing manufacturer sites it seems the SanDisk Ultra 2 might be the best choice? what do you think?

Thanks in advance,

Terry

Great choice Terry, that card is a good match for the D70. Check out http://www.robgalbraith.com for a comparison of cards by camera they are being used in. They confirm your choice.

ps welcome aboard

Thanks Glen,

My choice was based on every camera mag giving it a great review :)

Is $200 a good price for the 512Mb Sandisk Ultra 2? Thats price is from Digital City on George St.

Cheers.

I use one of these cards too and i think it's great.

If you check the internet i'm sure you'll find one much cheaper than $200 (plus postage)

Killakoala - I cant wait for postage, need to have it by the weekend :)

I have both a Sandisk Ultra II and just a normal Sandisk (both 256 mb). I have to say, that for general use, they both function the same. It's only after you've filled the camera's buffer that the Ultra II shines. So if you're not going to take lots of photo's in succession regularaly, a normal card or even a 40X or 60X would probably suffice. That said, with such a small price difference these days I guess you may as well go the Ultra II.

Dragonstar, I'm with you, for the small price difference ($20 or so) it would be mad to get the std card. The day you want to do sports photography you would rue saving twenty bucks.

I dont want to be restricted @ the F1 cos I bought a slower card :)

Terry,

No, being restricted by speed at the F1 is a major no-no.

I found that my old CP950 was more responsive (Monza, 2000) than the newer and fancier CP5700 last year in Melbourne.

In fact, using the 5700 was a real pain in the posterior, because of the digital, rather than optical, viewfinder. Of course the 5700 has much better optics than the 950, but that's no good if the camera is unusable in a given situation.

Where are you hoping to get seats for next year? IIRC, bookings open next week.

Most likely go for the Schumacher stand on corners 15-16. I prefer S-bends for action and the Pits entrance for watching/analysing the race.

How about you?

I think ticket might be on sale now? I should check.

I’ve got one Transcend 45x card that is just as quick as my Sandisk ultra II card.
It mite be worth a look at the prices of them.

Transcend 45x CF

I have 10 Transcend CF 45x in 512Mb, 1.0Gb, 2.0Gb in my bag and soon coming 4.0gb in back-ordered, used them in my D70/ D100/ D2H.
IMHO, I'm quite happy with their performance, I borrowed a Sandisk Ultra II 512Mb from friend, could not see the major difference in speed, while shooting 8fps on my D2H.

I’m the same birddog,
I’m happy with the performance with the TS card.
Had no probs with it at all.
As far as speed go’s I can’t tell the difference.

Swapping gears

Raydar,
Perhaps, in the next group meeting, I suggest we might swap glass(es) or CF cards with other so we can learn and understand more, everyone bring along what they have in their bag and choose a companion and play around with other gear.
What do you think?

PostPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2004 7:48 pm

That would be a great idea mate 8)

We up here are about to start trying to organize a day out to have a play & get to know each other.
This I hope will happen soon.
If I was down your way I would take every opportunity to attend all the meetings that came up.

But your idea is a great one, to get to no what the other side can do.

Cheers
Ray

Birddog, that is a great idea. I think we could all learn a lot from trying other gear.

ps my confirmation of the Sandisk purchase was not a slight on any other cards. I believe the fast cards from Sandisk, Lexar, Transcend etc will all suit the needs of a D70. I have an old Kodak CF card and it is noticably slower and wouldn't want a D70 user to get a card which performed like that.

Same here.

I have an old 128 card I got when I bought my 5700
I took 5 quick shots with that card loaded & you could have read a book, with the Wright light for the time it stayed on

The difference between the fast cards & this thing is unreal.

Cheers
Ray

Glen,
Totally agreed, Astone CF 45x is the same also.
Hope we'll have a beautiful day and meet everyone, lot of fun I wish. Perhaps gathering with friends and do the BBQ on one of our Sydney Parks with BBQ facility and sharing all what we have (I mean camera gears)

Damn!

And I thought that this was the D70 users' wife swapping group. :)

Seriously, being able to use another's lenses and such is a great idea. We should be able to shoot using different stuff, and review the images at our liesure, using the capture exif data to refresh our memories as what was shot with what.

We'll probably head for the Prost stand if we can get it.

Bookings open - if you're not a GP Advantage ticket holder - on the 25th.

Balmoral Beach?

Or perhaps Sans Souci? If we have access to some long lenses, we might be able to get some shots of aircraft take offs and landings from SYD.

Balmoral Beach and Aeroplanes. No chance, John Howard lives over here, so we don't see aeroplanes

I think that is a great idea and could make for a relaxing afternoon. Great idea Birddog. Good thought Gary about the exif data, will make it a lot easier to remember what we had in our hands.

I have 80-400 VR + 70-200VR + TC14+ TC20
We can track those flying bird easy, perhaps I can get a loan on a 200-400VR (I ordered one but no stock at Maxwell, back-ordered 3 months now), see if I can get my hand on a 300AFS f2.8. that is a good show day.

So, that means Sans Souci. And that gives us the views towards the airport.

And there's probably some watersports in Botany Bay too. :)

I can bring my 300 f5.6 IF ED. We'll need a few of our Manfrottos too, of course.

Let me check my diary to see which of the first couple of Saturdays in September is better for me. Who has problems with either of those days?

you can drive and park your car into the old Air control tower and looking out to the bay, the extended runway is there, but problem: if we get there in the morning, that's will direct to the sun, that spot is good in the afternoon, there's water jetski as well

yep

The old control tower sounds like a great idea, but does it have bbq facilities? I'm not even certain that Sans Souci itself does, but my expectation is that it would. When does the bushfire season (and fire bans) start?

More importantly, how does September 11 sound for y'all ?

As birddog says, afternoon will be better for this one; 1pm?

Sure

Sure, September 11, a bunch of dubious camera owners hanging around a control tower taking photos of passenger planes taking off.........Yeah, i'd love to be a part of that. :)

Where's your sense of misadvendture? I was wondering how long before somebody noticed the irony of this.

We should set this for September 5 then, and probably somewhere in Sans Souci or Brighton Le Sands. We can relocate to the old control tower after lunch

I saw this early this morning but wonder where did you find that calendar.
As my email to you, do you have any spare time next week, so you can meet me at my address?

Monday or Tuesday afternoons look good for me. I need to be at my mechanic's workshop in Five Dock for a minor seat refit; shouldn't take more than a half hour, and we can meet after that. It'll probably be around 5-ish by the time I get there; i'll give you a call later today.
