Totally off cameras and something that has me stumped.

I posted this on another forum and then thought maybe some of the wizz kids on this forum might be able to explain this.


I had the Foxtel PDR installed on the 9th March and it is superb. I have the PDR connected to my Grundig via SCART with the digital sound routed through my Onkyo amp. All works fine. I have my DVD recorder connected to the PDR via the SCART connection plus I have the analogue connections from the DVD recorder back to the Onkyo.

I can record stored movies etc from the PDR HD to the DVD no problem at all and the results are superb.

The Problem: I want to record a program of one and half hours duration from the PDR HD to the DVD recorder and set the quality on the recorder to 2 hours. After 25 minutes the DVD recorder stops recording because the disc is full.

My simple mind says this: one hour on the PDR HD must be the same as 1 hour on the DVD - simply because the DVD can’t record faster than the output of the PDR HD - could someone please straighten my addled mind

Is that a new problem Chris? It didn't happen when you recorded the Wales v Ireland Rugby match for me...

As you are using the analogue interface to record it would seem logical that it would record in real time...

Can you see what's on the DVD, even though it stopped recording prematurely? Are you using a different brand / type of DVD media?

In your message, you imply that it works ok for films? or does it bomb out for those too???

I was going to PM you John re the Wales/Ireland match to see if you had the whole match recorded - obviously you did.

When the recording stops after 25 minutes on a 2 hour record setup on the DVD recorder, I can watch what has been recorded at its very good.

Tried using the 4 hour recording mode on the DVD recorder and it recorded for about 56 minutes before stopping. I know its not a macrovision problem.

Just had a thought - your DVD was a DVD+R and it worked, I have been trying the same thing to a DVD+RW - will try normal DVD+R and see if it works. In theory it should be the same.

Having not used either of these devices, but hasarding a few guesses, I have this to ask:

How are you recording? HDD then DVD or straight DVD?

Real time? If so, wouldn't that mean no compression?
How was Leek's successful disc recorded? Real time onto DVD, or onto the HDD then DVD?

Onto HD and then re-recorded to the DVD,

I have just tried a no-name DVD+R and it got to 47 minutes then I HAD TO STOP - so it’s looking better. The first DVD was a TDK.

Will try full test this evening - it could have been a DVD problem

it certainly sounds like some form of compression. Even moreso when you say you changed the time from 2hrs to 4hrs and the length of recording time doubled as well.

Are there any settings that you can look to change ?? As is usually the case, it's the simplest solutions that often fix the problem.

I wouldn't imagine it'd be the recording media DVD +R or DVD RW. If you look on the shiny side of the disc, has the entire disc been burnt, or does the track finish part way through ?? If it fills the disc, I would tend to think that there is no compression, therefore the file size is much larger and it fills the disc quicker than the time specified.

Just a few stabs in the dark......

All sorted - it was initially a bad DVD+RW. Tried another and that was OK but on ripping it showed a bad sector. Bought some new DVD+RW’s and it worked a charm. The other problem was the internal DVD player on the mac was showing stuttering playback - this was rectified by using the LaCie dual layer external unit.
