A few weeks ago my shutter died after 22,000 shots. The camera was out of its warrenty period by 2 weeks so I sent the camera to Maxwells for a repair quote. Imagine my suprise when they rang me to say they would repair it under warrenty! Blimey Billy Blinker! Did I hear right?
Well, I have just picked the camera up and it seems to work perfectly. They replaced the sequence motor and cleaned and serviced the camera and updated the firmware to ver 1.03. Weird thing is...it seems to lock focus much quicker then before...and I have been using a D2h for the last week so I expected less. Very odd. But anyhow....just a warning to you all...look after your sequence motor and it will look after you.

Full kudos to Maxwells for this action on their part. Good news indeed.

The new firmware; IIRC this is the D70S version, isn't it? From their press release ...

"The firmware update includes the following additions and refinements:

* Improved performance for the 5-area autofocus system's Dynamic Area AF and Closest Subject Priority Dynamic Area AF modes.

* Updated menus with a new design similar to that of the D70s, making them easier to view and quicker to recognize.

* Added in-camera page setup support for PictBridge compatible printers."

You're saying that the first of these points is, indeed there, and noticeable.

Apart from the other features noted above, the other question we need answered relates to the wb - is it now encrypted with this new firmware?

Now all Maxwells need to do is get some of their service people into the Rebate side of things and perhaps their image will improve !?!

I got a pretty quick turn around with my rebate...
I bought my D70 and faxed my request for the rebate off on the last day of March and go the cheque early this week. Pretty good I thought....
To date, this has been my only contact with Maxwells, though I do use their website to drool over lenses that I can't afford

Once you have you 30 posts up then you can drool over the lenses on Birdies site and maybe you will be able to afford some.

I think the new update is coming in mid may.

The 1.03 is an older firmware (not the D70s update).

That's what I was wondering.

Just checked at Nikon-Asia.com; this is the January update that fixed or added some Chinese menus, but it was generally accepted that it did nothing for the camera in terms of performance or functionality, and consequently very few people (that I know of) downloaded and installed it.

The next update is the one we're waiting with baited breasts for.

I think it's the Karma, Matt. You use your camera very well and it needed to get back into your capable hands without delay. Glad to hear that this story ended well for you.

They said it now has a lifetime guarantee for me and all of my descendants until July 2005. I was so flabbergasted I sent them champagne!

So what's next

I'm anotherone who is happy with the rebate from Maxwell's.

Mine turned up approximately two and a half weeks after sending of the
registration;no complaints here.

I'm not sure! They didn't replace the shutter, just a motor. I'll test it tomorrow to see what the count is. If they have reset it then my camera's "Born again"! Nice to have it back anyway.

As this thread is about Maxwells service I will ask my question here.

I've had my D70 for about six months, with Maxwell guarantee slip, got the rebate.

What is the go with this free service I've heard about?

They will clean the dust off your CCD...but only once, after which you pay around $50 for further cleans. Good idea to learn how to do it yourself.

I never understood what this expression actually meant so I just looked it up. Perhaps I'm not alone.

Maxwell did ok by me to, emailed my copy of the reciept and waranty and recieved the rebate 12 days later, including the weekends
