Requirements to obtain "special access" on D70Foru

Postby Aussie Dave on Tue May 03, 2005 10:09 am

just wondering that the requirements are to obtain "special access" to some of the forums that are blocked ??

Is this like members status once 30 posts has been reached ??

Just curious.....

Dave, 30 posts + 1 image posted, though this is arbitary. 29 posts saying "Am I there yet, can I be a full member now" is not what we want, just 30 posts of participation either asking questions, answering or just discussion. Email Gary or Leigh and they will upgrade you if you don't have access to the members section. It isn't standard due to a couple of people trying to get 30 posts up in two hours

Dave, are you still blocked? It's a trivial task, but please PM either myself or Leigh if you need this.

Scott, the "member" status that you can see automatically kicks in at 30 posts, but the joining of the members group isn't automated. We've thought about doing that, and while it would save us a little work, it gives us a chance to manage who does, and who doesn't, have access.

That's one way that we can deal with those whom we might feel are "spamming" the forum in order to try to gain access: everyone needs personal review.

This also permits us to grant early access too, btw, where somebody, for instance, doesn't post too much, but does come to the minimeets or other gatherings. FWIW, I view such attendances as being roughly equivalent to about 10 posts here.

Essentially, we could do it as an automated process, but there have been some absolutely annoying people (not many, I might add) who literally came on, messaged us for access and we told them what the requirement was at the time, and by spamming pushed themselves up to 30 posts in one day and then asked for access.

There are only a few people in here who really ever do 30 posts in a day, and they're usually parts of the Mod / Admin team, our patron Birddog, and very senior members who obviously like posting a lot.

Also, once you're in the members section, you can post as much as you want and it won't bother us.

But we have had people who try to take advantage of our system and because of this, alas, we have to run through the checks ourselves.

Yes, I'll mention something about that too, shall I?

Comments like that, while completely unneccessary, are usually allowed, partly because you've been here a while, but mostly because we're like a family here so simple comments like that and other comedic attempts at... ermm... comedy... are always allowed.

One of these individuals however who did try to take advantage came on and posted every question you could conceivably ask within a day and even extended questions with comments such as (these aren't quotes, these are the way he did it) 'Yeah... I wonder how?'.

So your useless comments are spam, Chris.

However, part of the membership to the Members Only section does require some posts to have quality and / or to show that you're a part of the community.

Basically, don't try to use us. We'll know. :)

I totally agree Leigh - I have tried throughout my time on this forum to keep my comments instructive and constructive, and to receive the same back from other members.

We are a community, that now spans the world, who have one aim. Not to constantly air the merits of the D70 alone but photography as a whole.

The success of this forum has been assured by 99% of members being responsible and of the admin and moderators who have enabled this forum to be what it is today - a joy to be a member and above all else - friends :)

Don't get wise and take my party animal status away...and if I ever see someone else as the party animal, I'm out and deleting all of my posts. There's only enough room here for one PA. That's me. Clear everyone?!! :o  :o

Kasey Chambers. I love her metallic lower lip ornamental thingy.

Whatever happened to the "Joker" subtitle? Has that idea completely been erased from our collective memories since it invoked so much controversy?

It was "Village Idiot" and I still have no problem with using it... I'm just not allowed to because people take it as an offense.

Go figure. Who'd have thought that by me calling someone an idiot, they'd take it offensively, even when they are idiots?
