I was browsing on nikonians and noticed several members complaining that when using the iTTL mode with an SB800 for portraits the subjects all have closed eyes because of reacting to the monitor preflash that goes off first.

Has anybody here noticed this happening? I can't say that I have

I haven't had mine for long, but I can notice thru the viewfinder that you can see the pre-flash.

If it ever became a big concern, I'd use the AE-L button as FV lock and as long as the ambient lighting isnt changing (ie. you were indoors), the flash can reuse it's metered value (and no pre-flash will occur).....unless you take too long between shots and the camera falls into standby (I think ???)

I've only ever noticed pre-flashes when the SB800 is operated linked in wireless mode. There is noticeable latency in the flash firing the "money shot".

I made a note of the lack of eye blinks in subjects when Geoff and I shot the D70 xmas party in Sydney last year. Many hundreds of images from both of us - I can't recall any having eyes closed.

I notice this but not yet as have only taken a few pics of the kids and my brother using my new flash i got yesterday but yes the i can see the pre flashes when you have the redeye turned on in camera but so far so good.

You are absolutely right John - you can overcome the preflash by using FV lock custom setting 15
