Just wanted to know if any mac users have updated to Tiger yet and, if so, their impressions

Not yet Chris, my brother is in the process of trialling it for me! I always let him lose his valuable data first!!

I am with you on this Liam - I have been reading that a few programs cease to work (as usual) and a lot of them are those essentials like Nortons, Disk Warrior and Tech Tools. Plus there are problems with firewire (again) and Maxtor H/Ds

Ahhh..not more problems with Maxtor's. My external backup drive is a Maxtor and I had to wait for 10.2.8 to be updated before I could get the bl00dy thing to work!!

I also had serious issues with Konfabulator (the shareware prog that the dashboard concept is based on) Widgets that needed a 24/7 net connection and am weary of dashboard for this reason.

As I said, I'll let my brother try it out for me and let ya know if I upgrade!

The Tiger's purring along nicely here. I do have a minor problem with my five year old Epson 1160 printer. At the moment, I can't seem to get it to print an A3 size photoshop document. Using 10.3.9 on an older G4 for that at the moment.

Spotlight (and Smart Folders) is extremely useful. Automator is powerful and very easy to use. Dashboard is ho-hum eye-candy. There's also a really cool dictionary that displays the dictionary entry if you hover over a word whilst holding down the Ctl+Cmd+D keys (Cocoa apps only, I think).

I purchased and installed Tiger last Friday, the day of its release. I was impressed by the speed and polish that it had and all was well.

Until Monday night when I got a kernel panic on shutdown. I restarted and shut down again to get another kernel panic. I eventually reinstalled and the kernel panics went away until the next morning. Last night I did an archive and install and then manually moved filed between the old and new systems. I then restarted a heap of times and so far so good. In general I'm quite impressed with Tiger but I was glad that I was fully bakced up when all the fun and games started. Tiger uses a completely different kernel than the previous OS and so any kernel extensions from third parties that are not written for it are likely to cause problems up to an including kernel panics as I got. Things like Norton utilities and anti-virus are guaranteed to cause grief.

Anyway, in general I'm quite happy with Tiger but was pretty annoyed at the grief I copped with kernel panics. I felt like a Windows user! All I need now is viruses and spyware. In the end it might give me an excuse to upgrade to a G5 and that couldn't be a bad thing.
