I have seen several photo gallaries were the owner would have a grey scale to use to set your monitor.

Question is what are the steps to do this? When I look at the pictures at their gallaries the seem to look fine. I guess I just want to make sure I see what they see. ;)

The greyscale that you have seen on some galleries is really just to see if your monitor is too dark or light.
If you can see a difference between the darkest and second darkest blacks
and also between the lightest whites then that should be OK.

However that does not show colour balance which is a lot of what monitor calibration is all about.
A "Spyder" or similar is what is really needed to set that properly. I don't own one :(

There are many knowledgable people on this forum to help.
A search of the forum is usually a good place to start.

Hope this helps, Greolt
