Who has a custom curve loaded into their camera, and which one?

I think I loaded fotogenik's p&s v4 curve but I don't use it 'cos I shoot in Raw mode now

I just loaded White Wedding V35 just to have a look, but I always shoot in RAW as well. I was just wondering if anyone had done any playing around with them

I use photogenetics P&S 4 curve. I shoot RAW also but since I do PP in NC (conversion anyway), P&S gets recognised by the software.

That's exactly right. You can also use CurveSurgery if you later want to change to a different curve. I also read somewhere that PS CS2 (but not CS) recognises Nikon curves in its ARC.

This is correct. It will have an asterisk next to the camera setting in use.

As another option, you can manipulate your own curves in Nikon Capture and name them whatever you like. Then when you open the NEF, go into the "curves" menu, go up to the icon in thop right and select LOAD....then choose one of your preset curves.

You can mimick, as many as you like and you can try different curves out to see which one suits your photo the best. To use curves in this way, it moght be best to leave the Tone Compensation on the D70 to normal.

Just another option.....

Just to add though. There are two types of curves. Ones used in-camera and those used in the Capture Editor. They CANNOT be interexchanged. If you shot using an in-camera curve and later want to apply a different curve you must do so with the Curve surgery program.

NC won't replace the curve used in-camera with a custom curve though - the only way to do this is with Curve Surgery (or Raw Magick). NC applies the custom curve on top of the curve applied in-camera. NC will, however, replace an in-camera curve with a standard curve (ie Normal, Low Contrast, etc.).

True. What I mean is that you can not use any curve "in-camera" and just select from pre-saved curves you keep in NC. If you shoot RAW, unless you know you definitely want to use a particular curve, you have the option of not using any at all with the camera and just using NC to add one during PP.

I use the Digital_Agfa_Optima custom curve and I love it. I thought it was a Fotogenetic curve but I might be mistaken as I cannot seem to find it on his site.

Oldskool's sReala is loaded. I have started using it again after shooting with the normal curve for a long time and using CSP to replace curves where required.

I just tried Fotogenetic's Point and Shoot v4.1 last night and was very happy with the results
This is my first time playing with custom curves and I am just starting to realise what I can do with my D70 thanks to this forum

just wait till you start having success with RAW and realise just how much further you can push things.

I used to not care for raw too much ... thens tarted getting into it and kicking myself that other shots ive taken werent in raw.

I still shoot a LOT of jpeg, for convienience, but if a shot is likely to be something important / nice , then i flick to raw. Usually about 25% of shots from a holiday or trip, will be raw.

Yep, raw offers so much more than jpeg for those must have images, including a convulted workflow. One of the great things with raw is being able to change the curve in CSP or RML. Can't say that I ever shoot jpeg. The convenience of being able to correct an image in post is important to me, especially as I will push to the right whenever I can resulting in very (overly) bright images.

yep, though ive automated my workflow now enough that i can just click bevelled buttons in PS CS ... actions are in button mode, pull a bunch of NEF's inm, sharpen, adjust slight things, "as shot" WB, then dump out as PSD or TIFF.

Then i manually flick through the tiffs / psd and if theres anythign i want to uniquely change, ill do so, then launch another batch to dump them out to jpegs. (I keep the nef as an unmodified negative.)

Of course if you want to tweak the actual raw covnersation to pull lost shadows etc then its manual ... but pretty much everything can be done in CS anyway so i choose to leave the NEF > PSD/TIFF as an automated step.

saves me bucketloads of time.

Anything super special, ill end up doing manually from scratch anyway, but thats a bit different to just processing 200 beach photos etc.

Have you checked out "RAWSHOOTER"...freely available on the web? It is very fast and very professional and leaves Nikon Capture Editor for dead. Took me 15 minutes of playing around with it to decide that it was going to get a lot of use.

Tried it and agreed, well recommended!
But I'm still using NC

I am shooting more and more in raw and archive them. As my PS skills improve, I find that I can savage alot of my old pictures. Somewhat I still prefer Nikon Capture and don't mind if i need to spend more time processing them as they are part of my learning process and i enjoy the exercise.

Interesting. Played with this for a while and didn't like it - preferred NC. Maybe I need to have a longer peek, given it comes so highly recommended.
