I am a newbie.

Just about to purchase a new desktop on a limited budget, and wondered if there was anything new concerning the LCD v CRT monitor debate.

I was looking at a Dell 8400 set up, but concerned that I might be disappointed if I went down the LCD path. I am currently working on a laptop and get frustrated with the difference in brightness when the screen is at different angles.

Any clues?

Welcome and congrats on your first post.

For photography CRT beats all but the very best (=expensive) LCD. I have both CRT and LCD (dual monitors) with both calibrated via a spyder and yet pics are more accurate appearing colour on the CRT (and closer to the print output which is important). LCDs have a problem with blacks in particular.

Given your budget I'd go CRT unless space is a real issue.

Welcome Bob - Peter has it in one. If the computer card allows it, you can always add an LCD later on

The option I'd look at is to have a video card with both analog and dvi (digital) ports, and to use a crt on one for graphics and possibly purchase an lcd at a later point.

CRT is the way to go if you want to use it mainly for PP

I agree , having said that I have a Benq fp937s+ and am quite happy with it
The viewing angles are better than the IBM laptop I use at work and the brightness is a bit hard to get use to , and a 19" crt would not have fit on my desk

I know that common wisdom says a CRT minotor for clour precessing............but I have found that I am getting better and more consistent results with my LCD......go figure

The other problem with lcd's is the dotpitch hasn't come down far enough yet for processing sharp photos.. my 19" crt has a dp of .21 and my 17" lcd a dp of .26 (the lower the better). Big difference in the quality of the image being displayed on each screen.

Welcome to the forum!! I recently went down the 'which kind of monitor should I purchase' path, and after a lot of helpful advice I chose the CRT, as it has been said by Birdy and others, there really is no comparison at the moment especially if you want to use it for PP. I can HIGHLY recommend the LG 19" T910B flatscreen CRT monitor (Leek purchased one around the same time as I did), I think it's brilliant. You can probably pick one up for around the $300 mark. Good luck with this and let us know how you get on.

Still haven't made my purchase yet. One supplier has suggested a 19" Mitsubishi Diamond View 997FD Flat CRT Monitor. I can't find out much about it on the web. Has anyone any views on this monitor. I have yet to see one in real life.

I would appreciate any feedback.

What about the apple's LCD screen. Are they any good?

If I remember correctly, the Mitsubishi Diamond view have the Sony Trinitron CRT tube, if so, and you can put up with the faint 2x horizontal calibration bars, then they are reputed to be one of the better monitors around..

Nexxus, Apple's LCD's are very good and rate among SGI's and Dell's LCD's.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp 17" which I think is excellent.

It gives better colour than my Trinitron CRT which my wife now uses, although the I have to concede that the CRT is now 5 years old and has only ever been calibrated with Adobe Gamma.

LCDs also have a much smaller footprint, which is a godsend on my crowded desk.
