Did anyone try Sigma EF-500 DG ST with D70?
Sigma says:
It is compatible with new i-TTL system (D2H, D70). TTL Auto varies depending on the lenses in use, but it works on all cameras. It is possible to use Manual Flash as well. It is also possible to enjoy distance-priority manual, which is peculiar to Nikon (except D1X and D1H cameras). Autozoom head only works with built-in CPU lenses. AF Auxiliary Lamp can be used when attaching an AF lens (except some camera models). Available with cameras providing red-eye reduction control only. Wireless Flash function is also available with D70 camera. Designated Slave Flash, Normal Slave Flash can be used with all models. Rear-Curtain Synchro, Exposure Compensation Functions are also available (except some camera models). Multi Flash function can be used with all camera models. For details please refer to compatibility table. Manual switching of the amount of light is from 1/1 to 1/64. Auto Power-Off function shuts off 80sec. after use.

One can get it for about US$110-115 from eBay. Any thoughts?

Do a search in the dpreview/D70 forum, going back 2-3 days. Someone has reported a problem using the Sigma EF 500 flash on board the D70 and the camera was acting funny. But you have mentioned firing the sigma in slave mode... Cannot help you here though..

These issues has been discussed long ago on this board, I had and was playing with it. Did not have much result and my interest with that Sigma flash gun on both mode on and off the D70.

We discussed the Sigma 500 right back when the board first started. Check around August ...

Be wary, and alert to what you're looking at though. Sigma have several different but very similarly named flash units which, on casual inspection, all seem to be the correct one. They're not.
