50mm f/1.8 AF question from new owner (fE E error)

Hi everyone,

Been looking through this forum for quite a while and sure have learned a hell of a lot. Appreciate all the info and friendly atmosphere.

Bought a 50mm f/1.8 AF from eBay, arrived today. However, if I set the aperture ring on the lens to ANYTHING OTHER THAN f/22, my D70 gives me a fE E error.

The lens will only operate under f/22, but I seem to be able to change aperture settings (to f/2.8, f/1.8 etc.) through the camera itself.

Is this normal operation for using this lens on the D70? Does this mean I can't use the aperture ring on the lens anymore?

Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.

Greetings and welcome,

This behaviour is normal on all Nikon lenses.

Dont worry about it.

Only the Professional Nikon bodies will allow you to change the aperature ring on the lense nowdays.

Yep, you set the lenses to minimum aperture (largest number) and make all changes from the camera body, not at the lens. That's just how it's done. No real disadvantage that I can think of offhand. Most of the lenses have a little switch with an orange line that can lock the aperture setting so you'll never have to see the error message again.

Thank you all.
