Is this the end of the Sigma/Nikon War?

I just read an article in this month's "Camera" magazine about a company called DxO ( http://www.dxo.com )
Apparently they have come up with software that will correct most of you lenses shortcomings.
The DxO Lab team has developed algorithms for each brand of D-SLR camera body and each brand of commonly used accessory lens. When you buy the software you specify the camera body and lens ( or lenses) you want it to work with. The software is then shipped with the appropriate modules.

Looks like you can now buy the bigma and have it perform like Birdoog's 200-400VR

PTLens -great alternative, and its cheap ;)

I think that just "fixes" barell/pincushion/moustash distortion right?

If thats all it does, then you could just download PTLens plugin filter for PS and hand over $5 to the author if you feel like it (and are an honest person)...works very well indeed.

Auto profiles are available, and it reads exif data to load the right algorithem for the focal length. The author even makes profiles for any lens that you send him the right type of images which allow him to develop the profile. Works in 16 bit, so ya can do this work very early in your RAW workflow...has vingetting correction built in....runs easily as part of a batch/action in PS....I cant say enough good things :)

If you dont have PS, then you could get the stand alone app too.

PTLens is free...well you should give him the $5 if you keep using it.

Dave - I don’t know where you are getting your $5 figure from

You are allowed one module to try for free, which I did. DxO Optics Pro is $US139.00 and the DxO Optics Pro 2.2 Elite is $US219.00. The modules for each lens are a different price, but average out at around $US35.00 for each lens

Im not talking about DxO....I said PTLens, I even had a link out to the site where you can get PTLens in my first post above <grin>

You should try it out to fix lens distortions etc...the $5 is the authors suggested donation to support his work...the listed lenses currently have profiles for PTLens, and are free to download :)

Sorry Dave I thought the thread was about DxO - being a designer I only have the lowly Macintosh and PTlens is not for me. Whoops sorry, unlike PC’s I can run Windows 2000 Professional on my Mac so I might give it a go.

Thanks for the tip
